Mercedes has just announced the opening of orders for the new AMG SL 63 S E Performance, a plug-in hybrid that becomes the most powerful convertible ever from the star brand, with 816 hp and 1420 Nm, resulting from the combination of the 612 hp and 850 Nm delivered by the well-known 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine that equips several of its models, with the 204 hp and 320 Nm provided by the electric motor installed on the rear axle.
These values translate into acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds, and a top speed of 317 km/h, for which the Speedshift MCT 9G paddle-shift gearbox with nine speeds, as well as the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system, the Active Ride Control suspension with active body roll control, and the rear axle steering system also contribute.
The 400 V electric motor, with technology derived from that used in F1 cars, is powered by a high-performance 6.1 kWh capacity battery, capable of providing a range of up to 13 km in 100% electric mode, and can be charged using the 3.7 kW on-board charger – while the energy recovery system, also similar to that used in F1, allows recovering up to 100 kW, through four levels of energy regeneration intensity.
The engineers at Mercedes-AMG have also equipped the SL 63 E Performance with a series of active aerodynamic solutions, including the carbon front profile (reacts to the selected driving modes, automatically extending downward about 40 mm from 80 km/h, to create the so-called Venturi effect, which “pushes” the car down onto the road), and the extendable rear deflector, with five new positions.
To stop this powerful 2+2 convertible, the standard carbon-ceramic discs have a diameter of 420 mm with six-piston calipers at the front, and 380 mm in diameter with single-piston calipers at the rear, “hidden” behind 20’’ wheels (optionally available in 21’’).
Mercedes has announced that the new AMG SL 63 S E Performance is now available for order starting at €253,600.
