Mercedes-AMG continues its electrification strategy and now it’s the turn of the performance division of the German brand to present its first plug-in hybrid. This is the Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid 4MATIC+, which comes in sedan and wagon variants and offers a power output that can reach up to 604 hp.
The heart of this sportier version is a turbocharged inline-six gasoline engine with 3.0 liters, producing 449 hp and 550 Nm of maximum torque, combined with an electric unit installed in the nine-speed gearbox that adds another 163 hp and 480 Nm of torque, resulting in a combined power of 577 hp. However, activating Race Start (launch control) increases the combined power to 604 hp for a brief period, with 750 Nm of maximum torque.
These numbers allow this electrified version to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds for the sedan, while the slightly heavier wagon version takes an additional 0.1s.
Both versions are electronically limited to a top speed of 250 km/h, but with the optional AMG Driver’s Package, they can reach 280 km/h and 275 km/h, respectively.
The 400-volt battery has a gross capacity of 28.6 kWh and is installed under the trunk floor, and the German brand promises a range in 100% electric mode of 100 km in the WLTP cycle.
This performance version of the E53 Class features a stiffer body, high-performance brakes, along with an enhanced suspension with steel springs and adaptive dampers, combined with all-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering.
The Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid 4MATIC+ is equipped with Comfort, Individual, Sport, and Sport+ driving modes for normal conditions, as well as a Slippery mode to handle wet or icy surfaces.
Esthetically, this new AMG version presents distinct design elements, including a specific illuminated radiator grille strip from the Mercedes sports division, as well as front apron air intakes. Profile highlights include 19” alloy wheels, while at the rear it is equipped with an AMG spoiler that contributes to a more sporty image.
Note also the standard AMG sports seats, upholstered in artificial leather Artico/microfiber Microcut with contrasting red stitching, while the AMG Performance seats are optional.
