Visa Cash App RB team principal Laurent Mekies expects a slow start to the season as the team focuses on establishing a strong foundation for the future. The team, previously known as AlphaTauri, made significant progress towards the end of 2023, moving up from last place in the constructors’ championship to eighth and challenging for seventh. Despite this progress, Mekies acknowledges that there are many areas that need improvement and is not afraid of starting the season at the back of the field once again.
Mekies explains that his initial task has been to familiarize himself with the team, its staff, and identify its strengths and weaknesses. The goal is to make improvements in all areas, ultimately leading to a significant increase in competitiveness. While this approach may not be the fastest route, Mekies believes it will consistently push them towards the front of the midfield, where they aim to compete.
“We are committed to laying the groundwork for our long-term goals, even if it means facing initial challenges and a potentially difficult start to the season. Building these foundations is our top priority,” Mekies states.
Having previously worked with a top team like Ferrari, Mekies expresses his excitement to begin his journey with VCARB, recognizing the team’s potential.
“It has been a long wait, especially during my time away from the sport. However, these past few weeks have been extraordinary as I joined the team. We see it as the birth of a new team – a tangible endeavor. It’s a unique team that will be built upon an exceptional legacy and a history we are proud of. Yet, we also approach it with the enthusiasm of a completely new team.”
