McLaren F1 Boss Zak Brown's Bold Humor Amid Controversial Disqualification: “We Sabotage Fairly!”

In a shocking twist that left fans buzzing, McLaren F1 team principal Zak Brown light-heartedly joked about “sabotaging” his drivers as the fallout from the Las Vegas Grand Prix disqualification continues to reverberate through the motorsport community. This cheeky quip, made during a recent event, raised eyebrows and ignited debates over McLaren's controversial race strategies, known as the 'papaya rules.'

Throughout the tumultuous 2025 season, McLaren faced a barrage of criticism for their refusal to favor either of their talented drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Instead of consolidating their efforts behind a single contender, McLaren's equal opportunity approach inadvertently played into the hands of their rivals, notably four-time champion Max Verstappen. As the season climaxed, Norris clinched the championship by a razor-thin margin of just two points over Verstappen, following an intense series of nail-biting races.

But the turning point? The Las Vegas Grand Prix, where both McLaren drivers were disqualified due to excessive wear on their skid blocks. This costly error allowed Verstappen to seize victory and dramatically shift the championship landscape, resulting in a staggering 25-point swing that could haunt McLaren for years to come.

During the dramatic showdown, Brown, who recently celebrated the launch of his book “Seven Tenths of a Second,” made a playful comment that had the audience in stitches: “We rotate whose car we sabotage weekend to weekend so we do everything totally fair.” The laughter echoed in the venue, but it was clear there was a deeper acknowledgment of the team's struggles.

Reflecting on the aftermath of the disqualification, Brown adopted a more somber tone, admitting, “We’ve made a mistake and to do anything to hurt our drivers getting the chance to win the drivers' championship, we felt pretty bad.” This candid moment underscores the pressure cooker of emotions surrounding McLaren as they navigate the competitive landscape of Formula 1.

As the 2026 season beckons, all eyes are on whether Norris can replicate his previous success. With major regulation changes looming, the stakes couldn't be higher. While Mercedes is touted as the frontrunner, McLaren’s MCL40, powered by a Mercedes engine, could keep them in the hunt if they can leverage their strengths effectively. Meanwhile, Ferrari is already making waves with innovative designs, and Red Bull remains a formidable threat, bolstered by Verstappen's proven track record.

Will McLaren rise to the occasion, or will they falter under the mounting pressure? The 2026 season promises to deliver a rollercoaster of excitement, and fans will be eagerly watching to see if Norris can once again take his place atop the podium or if the shadows of Las Vegas will linger over McLaren's ambitions. The battle for supremacy is far from over, and the thrill of F1 racing is set to reach new heights!
