In the high-stakes world of Formula 1, McLaren’s bold strategy of ‘letting them race’ could be the very factor that leads to their downfall in the intense battle for the championship title.

As the 2025 season unfolds, the top three drivers are locked in a fierce competition, with only 22 points separating them. McLaren’s own Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris currently hold the first and second positions, respectively. However, the team’s decision to treat both drivers equally, without any preferential treatment, raises questions about their ability to secure their first double championship since 1998, especially with defending champion Max Verstappen still in contention.

Unlike some other teams, McLaren has chosen not to impose team orders, allowing Piastri and Norris to compete on a level playing field. This approach extends to their on-track battles, with the team refraining from intervening in their racing duels. While this strategy has so far avoided any major disasters, it has sparked concerns that the team’s reluctance to designate a clear lead driver could ultimately hinder their championship aspirations.

During the recent Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, the internal competition at McLaren was on full display as Norris, on fresher tires, closed in on Piastri towards the end of the race. Despite the potential advantage, no team orders were given, leading to a tense on-track battle between the teammates.

The team’s decision not to intervene in such situations has drawn both praise and criticism. While it showcases McLaren’s commitment to fair competition, some argue that prioritizing individual glory over team success could prove detrimental in the long run.

With the Monaco Grand Prix on the horizon, the pressure is mounting for McLaren as both Norris and Piastri aim for their first win in the prestigious event. The unforgiving streets of Monaco leave no room for error, and any misstep could open the door for Verstappen to capitalize on his rivals’ misfortune.

As the season progresses, the battle for supremacy within McLaren intensifies, raising doubts about the team’s chances of clinching both the drivers’ and constructors’ titles. With Verstappen lurking close behind, ready to pounce on any opportunity that presents itself, McLaren must carefully navigate the fine line between allowing their drivers to compete and ensuring their collective success.

In the cutthroat world of Formula 1, where milliseconds can determine victory or defeat, McLaren’s unwavering commitment to ‘let them race’ may ultimately be the deciding factor in their quest for championship glory.
