McLaren Team Ready to Shake Things Up: Tough Decisions to Upset Drivers Norris and Piastri

In a bold and daring move, McLaren’s team principal, Andrea Stella, has declared that they are unafraid to make Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri “a little upset” by implementing tough strategic decisions during the F1 2025 season. Stella emphasized that it is not a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’ they will shake things up, following criticisms of the team being too cautious at the recent Japanese Grand Prix.

Despite claiming victories in Australia and China, Norris and Piastri had to settle for second and third place at Suzuka, with reigning World Champion Max Verstappen securing the win. Many believed McLaren had the fastest car on the track, but their strategic choices allowed Verstappen to take the lead.

One controversial decision was pitting Norris on the same lap as Verstappen, denying him the advantage of clean air. Additionally, in the closing laps, McLaren opted to keep Norris ahead of Piastri, despite the latter showing more speed. These decisions led to criticism of McLaren’s tactics, with accusations of missed opportunities in previous seasons.

Stella admitted that McLaren identified risky opportunities to overtake Verstappen early in the race but opted for caution to avoid losing positions in traffic. With Norris and Piastri expected to contend for the F1 2025 title, the team faces the challenge of managing two competitive drivers vying for victory.

The team principal acknowledged the complexity of having two winning drivers and the impact on race strategy, stating, “When it comes to having two McLarens up there, does it increase the complexity? Yes. Does it increase the opportunity? Yes.”

Stella dispelled notions that McLaren would have approached the Japanese GP differently if held later in the season, emphasizing the balance between aggression and caution in strategic decisions. He highlighted the need to let some races unfold naturally in the early stages of the F1 2025 season.

As McLaren gears up for the Bahrain Grand Prix, Stella’s remarks signal a shift towards a more assertive and calculated approach, setting the stage for potential conflicts and challenges within the team. With drivers like Norris and Piastri at the helm, McLaren is poised to shake up the F1 world with their fearless and uncompromising strategies.
