The iconic McLaren name is on the brink of vanishing from the high-octane world of Formula E, with a major overhaul and fresh investments required to keep the team racing into the next era. Sources reveal that McLaren CEO Zak Brown has signaled the end of the road for the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team in the Gen4 era starting from 2026, paving the way for new commercial partnerships and a revamped team identity.

Originally formed from the Mercedes EQ entry in 2022, the McLaren FE team enjoyed substantial backing from the Saudi Arabian initiative NEOM during the Gen3 era. However, with the partnership set to expire in 2026, McLaren is now eyeing a shift towards a Le Mans hypercar program as the Formula E team seeks new investors and a strategic restructure to stay competitive.

In a strategic move, the team is exploring fresh collaborations with registered manufacturers and engaging with potential investment groups to secure its spot in the Gen4 lineup. Speculations suggest that the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team, under the leadership of team principal Ian James, is on track to finalize a deal with a prominent manufacturer by the end of May, setting the stage for an electrifying new chapter.

While details remain under wraps, industry insiders hint at a possible Le Mans 24 Hours announcement in June, where the outgoing Jaguar FE team principal, James Barclay, is rumored to take the helm of McLaren’s sportscar project. The Formula E paddock is abuzz with anticipation as Barclay and James gear up to steer McLaren into a thrilling new venture from 2026 onwards.

Despite facing initial challenges transitioning from a full manufacturer entity to a customer entrant, the McLaren team remains optimistic about its future prospects in Formula E. With the electric motorsport landscape evolving rapidly, McLaren aims to fortify its position by aligning with strong manufacturer partnerships and attracting new investors to propel the team towards success in the upcoming Gen4 era.

As the countdown begins for the Gen4 era in Formula E, all eyes are on McLaren as they prepare to redefine their racing identity and soar to new heights in the world of electrifying motorsport. Stay tuned for more updates as McLaren gears up for a high-voltage transformation in the realm of Formula E.
