McLaren’s Bold Move: The Unraced F1 Upgrade That Could Change Everything

In a surprising turn of events, McLaren decided to forgo racing its first Formula 1 floor upgrade of the season at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, despite testing it during the weekend. The reigning constructors’ champion team unveiled two new upgrades in Saudi Arabia – a redesigned diffuser for increased downforce and a new rear brake duct winglet arrangement for improved aerodynamic efficiency.

Although the new floor was tested on both Oscar Piastri’s and Lando Norris’ cars during practice sessions, McLaren ultimately chose to stick with the specification from the opening races for the remainder of the weekend. Team boss Andrea Stella mentioned that the new parts were considered test items and were not integrated into the race cars. This decision has sparked curiosity and speculation among fans and experts alike.

The break before the Miami GP now gives McLaren an opportunity to analyze the data gathered from testing the new parts on track before potentially utilizing them at the upcoming race. While the new diffuser was not raced in Saudi Arabia, McLaren did commit to using its low-drag rear wing for the entire event. This strategic move aligns with McLaren’s approach in 2025 of introducing minor, circuit-specific tweaks to enhance performance.

Stella emphasized the importance of upgrades for McLaren, stating, “Definitely we need upgrades.” The team acknowledges the tight competition in F1 this season and understands the need to continually improve to stay ahead. The decision to hold off on racing the new floor upgrade demonstrates McLaren’s commitment to thorough evaluation and optimization of performance.

As McLaren gears up for the Miami GP, fans can expect to see potential changes to the MCL39 as the team strives to maintain its competitive edge. With drivers like Norris and Piastri pushing for success, McLaren’s meticulous approach to upgrades and performance enhancements could play a crucial role in their championship aspirations.

The upcoming race in Miami will test McLaren’s ability to adapt and evolve in the highly competitive world of Formula 1. Stay tuned as the team navigates the challenges of the season and aims to secure its position at the forefront of motorsport innovation.
