McLaren doubts Christian Horner’s ‘honesty’ regarding Lando Norris comment after Austrian Grand Prix.

The 2024 Formula 1 season marked a turning point for McLaren, culminating in their first Constructors’ Championship in 26 years. Central to this resurgence was the transformative impact of Rob Marshall, who joined the Woking-based team from Red Bull. McLaren boss Andrea Stella has showered praise on Marshall’s contributions, crediting his expertise and hands-on approach as game-changers for the team’s fortunes.

From Red Bull to McLaren: Marshall’s journey

Rob Marshall, a key figure in Red Bull’s engineering success under Adrian Newey, joined McLaren at the start of 2024 as Technical Director for Engineering and Design. However, following the departure of David Sanchez, Marshall quickly transitioned into the role of Chief Designer. With over 17 years of championship-winning experience at Red Bull, Marshall brought invaluable knowledge and a proven track record of excellence.

Under Marshall’s influence, McLaren developed what Stella described as arguably the best all-around package on the grid in 2024, securing their long-awaited Constructors’ title.

Stella: “Marshall’s impact exceeded expectations”

Speaking to select media, Stella expressed that Marshall’s impact went beyond even the high expectations that accompanied his arrival.

“Rob came with a wealth of experience and knowledge from a technical point of view and with a reputation,” Stella said. “If anything, we have been impressed even more than what we expected.”

Stella highlighted Marshall’s strengths in car design and layout, areas McLaren had struggled with prior to his arrival:

“He has incredible knowledge of how you design a car, especially from a car layout point of view. This is very important for 2025 and for 2026, and we missed this role at McLaren before.”

Marshall’s personal touch: A leader in the garage

Beyond technical expertise, Stella emphasized Marshall’s human qualities, noting that his energy and collaborative spirit have made him a favorite within the team.

“Rob brings fantastic human qualities; he is a very positive person, and everyone enjoys working with him. He’s hands-on, often seen under the car, getting his hands dirty. That’s something we missed before, and we are glad we have it now.”

A united technical team under Stella’s vision

Marshall’s arrival has bolstered McLaren’s already formidable technical lineup, which includes Peter Prodromou (Technical Director, Aerodynamics), Mark Temple (Technical Director, Performance), and Neil Houldey (Technical Director, Engineering). The cohesive structure, envisioned by Stella, has allowed these specialists to focus on their respective areas while fostering collaboration.

Neil Houldey, speaking to Motorsport.com, credited Stella for recognizing the need for this structure:
“It’s shown the entire technical team how we can all work together—different personalities, different specialities—but it’s brought everyone together.”

Eyes on the future

While 2024 was a banner year for McLaren, the team is already looking ahead to the challenges of 2025 and the significant regulatory changes in 2026. Marshall’s expertise in car design and his championship pedigree will be critical as McLaren strives to maintain its competitive edge.

The McLaren revival: A blueprint for success

Andrea Stella’s leadership, combined with Rob Marshall’s technical brilliance and a unified team structure, has set the stage for McLaren’s sustained success. As they prepare for the next chapter in Formula 1, McLaren’s resurgence serves as a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and the right leadership.
