McLaren’s Mixed Prospects: Lando Norris Foresees Both Triumphs and Trials in F1 2025 Season

Lando Norris, the top driver for McLaren, is confident that the McLaren MCL39 will dominate on most circuits in the 2025 Formula 1 season. However, he anticipates some challenging races where the team may face a few hurdles, despite being the current title favorites.

The 2025 season kicked off with a resounding victory for McLaren at the Australian Grand Prix. Norris and his teammate, Oscar Piastri, outperformed their competition, securing the top two spots on the starting grid with a comfortable margin of 0.385 seconds ahead of the third-placed Red Bull of Max Verstappen.

Although Piastri lost his second-place position to Verstappen following an expensive spin under hazardous conditions, Norris managed to fend off the reigning World Champion and clinch his fifth career victory. This triumph propelled Norris to the top of the Drivers’ standings for the first time in his career, disrupting Verstappen’s championship lead that had been unbroken since May 2022.

Speaking at the post-race press conference in Melbourne, Norris expressed confidence in the speed and versatility of McLaren’s car for the 2025 F1 season. However, he cautioned that the team may face some difficulties on certain circuits, referencing McLaren’s poor performance at the previous year’s Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Norris admitted that McLaren struggled significantly on low grip tracks like Las Vegas, with issues related to the front of the car, such as graining and lack of rotation. However, he emphasized that the team has made significant improvements to their car, making it more balanced for a variety of circuits, from high speed to low speed, and from high downforce to low downforce.

Despite the hype following their performance in Bahrain a few weeks ago, Norris pointed out that the team still has work to do. He revealed that the team’s low fuel pace was not as strong as some other competitors. He candidly stated that even if they were to run on minimal fuel and maximize the engine mode, they might not have been able to outpace their competition.

However, Norris expressed optimism about the upcoming race in China, citing their strong performance there last season, despite having a less competitive car. Last season, Norris clinched an impressive second place in China, splitting the dominant Red Bulls of Verstappen and then-teammate Sergio Perez on the podium. He also secured the pole position for the sprint race in Shanghai, which will once again be the first of six sprint races in 2025.

In conclusion, while McLaren is showing signs of dominance in the 2025 F1 season, the team recognizes the challenges that lie ahead and is ready to face them head-on. The next race in China will be a significant test for Norris and his team, but if their past performance is anything to go by, they are likely to deliver a strong performance.
