Hamilton Expresses Joy Over Ferrari Performance During F1 Pre-Season Testing

In the world of Formula 1, McLaren’s current dominance has surpassed that of Red Bull’s peak years, according to George Russell. The team’s stellar performance at the season opener Australian Grand Prix, where Lando Norris secured victory, has indeed confirmed the prevailing consensus that McLaren is the team to beat this season.

However, the true extent of McLaren’s lead remains shrouded in mystery due to intermittent weather conditions and Safety Car interventions, which saw Norris and his teammate Oscar Piastri gain a 14-second lead over Max Verstappen’s Red Bull in just 10 laps after surviving Verstappen’s initial charge.

Russell, prior to the race, had stated that McLaren’s front-row lockout was evidence enough that the team could shift its focus to the 2026 regulations and still clinch both titles. He reiterated this belief following McLaren’s triumphant start, asserting that the team’s advantage is greater than what Red Bull had during its peak in 2023.

However, Russell foresees that the McLaren drivers may not fully capitalize on their current supremacy as effectively as Verstappen did with his 19 wins in 22 rounds in the RB19. He opined, “Their car is definitely capable of winning every race. Their car should win every race, but I don’t think they will win every race this year. Let’s see.”

He went on to compare the current situation to Red Bull’s dominance in 2023, stating, “The gap they have this year on everybody is bigger than Red Bull has ever had. But when Max was in that [2023] car, he was pretty reliable every single lap, he did every single run in Q3, throughout qualifying, never really a question.”

As discussions leading up to the Chinese Grand Prix circulate around whether an FIA clampdown on flexible rear wings could destabilise McLaren, Norris remains confident that the team won’t need to modify its car. Russell concurs, asserting that the ruling wouldn’t have affected the outcome at the Albert Park Circuit.

Delving into the source of McLaren’s advantage, Russell reiterated that the team’s MCL39 car’s ability to preserve the Pirelli tyre longer during a race stint gives them an edge over their competitors. He explained, “They’re clearly doing something better than the rest, clearly substantially quicker than everybody when the tyres are getting hot. There’s room for us to improve, but we know we have room to improve, but we don’t feel like there are masses of opportunities to improve in that region, it’s quite tightly controlled.”

Russell’s statements not only highlight the formidable lead McLaren has established this season but also underscore the immense challenge the other teams face in catching up. The thrilling world of Formula 1 continues to captivate its audience, and with McLaren’s current dominance, this season promises to be an exciting one.
