Standing at the pinnacle of Formula 1 racing, McLaren’s current supremacy is so profound that they could potentially shift their focus to 2026 and still clinch the twin titles in 2025, according to George Russell.
The British racer had an unwavering belief in McLaren’s impending dominance heading into the Australian Grand Prix, given the superb pace they showcased throughout the pre-season testing phase in Bahrain. However, his teammate, Lando Norris, dismissed these predictions as myopic. Despite the skepticism, Norris outpaced his fellow McLaren driver, Oscar Piastri, to secure the pole position in the opening round.
Norris’s performance was not just a victory within the team; he was over three-tenths faster than the nearest non-McLaren racer, Max Verstappen of the Red Bull team. Russell, who finished fourth, lagged six-tenths behind Norris.
As 2026 ushers in a new set of regulations, F1 teams are faced with a strategic dilemma: when to shift their focus to the future car. Russell is confident that McLaren can direct their full attention to their next-generation vehicle while still reigning supreme in this season’s championships.
“We expected McLaren to be this strong; their performance has been outstanding,” Russell stated in an interview with Motorsport Week. He suggested that McLaren’s lead was so substantial that they could halt development now and focus entirely on the 2026 season.
Russell drew parallels with Red Bull’s strong start to the 2024 season, which he believes was not surpassed by any other team in terms of development. He argued that if a team starts the year with a six-tenths advantage, it’s unlikely that any team can close that gap within a year.
Russell attributes McLaren’s significant edge to their ability to maximize the performance of their Pirelli tyres with their recent car models. He pointed out their impressive performance in Singapore, their struggles in Vegas, and their excellent race pace in Bahrain as evidence of their prowess.
Russell conceded that the only real chance their rivals have to defeat McLaren in the upcoming race hinges on the weather, specifically if the predicted rain will make an appearance at the Albert Park Circuit. On a dry track, he anticipates McLaren’s lead will only grow, particularly in sector 3.
Despite the formidable lead of McLaren, Russell still expects a resurgence from Ferrari. Although Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton found themselves relegated to the fourth row, Russell believes Ferrari will be a key player in the fight behind McLaren. He also mentioned potential surprise performances from Yuki Tsunoda and Alex Albon, who have both shown promise this week.
So, while McLaren may be leading the pack, the race is far from over. The competitive spirit is alive and well in Formula 1, and we can expect a thrilling season ahead.
