McLaren’s epic return to WEC: first signing revealed after $7.5 million hypercar auction triumph

McLaren Charges into the Future: First Signing for WEC After $7.5 Million Hypercar Auction Triumph!

In a jaw-dropping revelation that has sent shockwaves through the motorsport community, McLaren has officially embarked on its audacious journey into the hypercar class of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) slated for 2027. This monumental move will see the iconic British team lock horns with formidable rivals like Ferrari, Aston Martin, Cadillac, and Alpine, all vying for supremacy in the apex of endurance racing. But that’s not all – McLaren is poised to make a triumphant return to the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours, a race it last conquered in 1995!

As McLaren continues to carve its niche in both Formula 1 and IndyCar, the team’s aspirations to capture the elusive Triple Crown of Motorsport are set to ignite fervor among racing enthusiasts from 2027 onward. Enter Mikkel Jensen, a 31-year-old Danish racing prodigy, who has become the first official signing for McLaren’s ambitious WEC campaign. Jensen, who has been making waves in the hypercar class with Peugeot since 2022, boasts a remarkable track record, including clinching the LMP2 class title in the prestigious IMSA series back in 2021.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Jensen stated, “I’m extremely proud to be joining the World Championship-winning McLaren family and excited to be a part of its Hypercar project from the early stages. Stepping onto the boulevard at the McLaren Technology Centre gives me goosebumps – it not only brings to life how much history McLaren has in Formula 1 but the 1995 Le Mans-winning F1 GTR reminds me that we have an incredible endurance story to continue.”

Adding fuel to the fire, James Barclay, the team principal of McLaren Endurance Racing, heralded Jensen’s signing as a pivotal milestone for the nascent Hypercar team. “Announcing Mikkel is another important milestone in the formation of our new Hypercar team. He has already proven himself as one of the most competitive and well-rounded sportscar racing drivers in the world and will bring with him a wealth of experience from the Hypercar category. We are delighted to have a driver of Mikkel’s calibre, experience and future potential,” Barclay remarked, underscoring the intense competition that awaits McLaren in what could arguably be the most exhilarating WEC season in history.

In a stunning twist, McLaren’s hypercar was recently auctioned off for a staggering $7.5 million, as part of a special ‘Triple Crown’ auction that has left collectors and enthusiasts buzzing. This sensational sale, which also featured a 2026-spec IndyCar and the unreleased MCL40A F1 car, amassed a staggering total of $19,927,500! The IndyCar fetched $848,750, while the F1 car commanded an astonishing $11,480,000, ranking it as the sixth-most expensive Formula 1 car ever sold at auction.

The winning bidder of the hypercar will not only receive this engineering marvel in the first quarter of 2028 but will also have their name etched on the chassis tag. Additionally, the package sweetens the deal with an exclusive book chronicling the car’s on-track saga, a race suit from one of the McLaren WEC drivers in 2027, and a host of lavish hospitality experiences including the 2026 Le Mans 24 Hours, Monaco Grand Prix, and Indianapolis 500.

As the motorsport world holds its breath, McLaren’s electrifying entry into the WEC is set to redefine endurance racing. Are you ready for the adrenaline-pumping action that lies ahead? Stay tuned as we bring you the latest updates from the heart of motorsport!
