Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri Take First Laps in McLaren’s Latest Challenger at Silverstone

McLaren has officially launched its 2025 Formula 1 campaign, becoming the first team to debut its new car—the MCL39—in a surprise shakedown at Silverstone.

After a dominant 2024 season that saw McLaren clinch its ninth FIA Constructors’ Championship, the team is now targeting both the team and drivers’ titles in one of the most competitive seasons in modern F1 history.

As part of a promotional filming day, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri took turns behind the wheel, testing the camouflage-liveried MCL39 ahead of its official 2025 livery reveal at the F1 75 event in London on February 18.

Zak Brown: “A Big Milestone in Our Title Fight”

McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown emphasized the significance of the MCL39’s track debut, making it clear that the team has one goal in 2025—winning everything.

“Today is a big milestone in our journey in the fight for the 2025 title. It’s great to get our Championship challenger, the MCL39, on track for the first time and to launch the culmination of the team’s hard work.”

Brown also acknowledged that 2025 will be a tougher fight than ever, with every team making gains over the winter.

“Last year highlighted just how much the grid has closed up, which is a brilliant thing for the sport. We believe we have made further steps forward, but we won’t know where we sit until we get into qualifying in Australia.”

Lando Norris: “We’ve Got a Lot to Do to Retain Our Title”

After securing his first Grand Prix wins in 2024, Lando Norris enters his sixth season with McLaren fully focused on his biggest challenge yet—winning the Drivers’ Championship.

“It’s exciting to hop in the MCL39 for the first time and see what it can do on track ahead of pre-season testing in Bahrain,” Norris said.

“This year will be more competitive than ever, so we’ve got a lot to do to be able to retain our Constructors’ title and go for the Drivers’ as well.”

The 25-year-old Briton, now regarded as one of the strongest drivers on the grid, believes McLaren is fully prepared but expects an intense battle when the season begins.

“The mood at the MTC is feeling positive but focused. We’re all looking forward to getting the car on track in Bahrain ahead of our competitive debut in Australia to see where we net out amongst the other teams.”

Oscar Piastri: “I’ve Had a Taste of Victory—Now I Want More”

After a breakout 2024 season that saw him take multiple race wins, Oscar Piastri is hungrier than ever as he enters his third season in Formula 1.

“It’s great to get behind the wheel of the MCL39 for the first time ahead of putting it through its paces in Bahrain,” Piastri said.

“The margins at the top are likely to be incredibly tight, but I’m excited by the room for growth after two seasons in the sport. Winning Grands Prix early in my career has given me the taste for success, and I want much more.”

The 23-year-old Australian believes McLaren’s 2024 momentum will be crucial as the team fights for back-to-back championships.

“As a team, we can take great momentum into 2025 after such a brilliant year in 2024. A big thank you to everyone back at base and trackside for all the hard work that’s been done so far.”

What’s Next for McLaren?

  • February 18 – Official MCL39 livery reveal at F1 75 Live
  • February 19-21 – Pre-season testing in Bahrain
  • March 16 – Season-opening Australian Grand Prix

As F1’s reigning champions, McLaren heads into 2025 as the team to beat. But with Red Bull, Ferrari, and Mercedes all gunning for revenge, will the MCL39 be strong enough to defend its crown?

One thing is certain—McLaren isn’t backing down from the challenge.
