McLaren Frustrated as Red Bull’s Verstappen Dominates Sprint Qualifying in Austin

With just six rounds remaining in the 2024 Formula One World Championship, the fierce title battle between McLaren and Red Bull is intensifying. Max Verstappen leads the charge, but Lando Norris remains in hot pursuit, just 52 points behind the reigning champion. The stakes are higher than ever, and every session matters as the season heads toward its climax in Abu Dhabi.

Both teams arrived at the United States Grand Prix weekend with significant upgrades. McLaren made changes to the suspension, front wing, and brake ducts of the MCL38, while Red Bull brought a reprofiled floor to their RB20. Despite these improvements, McLaren had a difficult Sprint Qualifying session at the Circuit of the Americas on Friday.

Max Verstappen once again asserted his dominance by securing pole position for the Sprint, while Lando Norris could only manage P4. Meanwhile, Norris’ teammate Oscar Piastri suffered a frustrating exit in SQ1, leaving him in P16 after a track limits violation erased his fastest lap.

In a statement released by McLaren following the session, Norris expressed disappointment with his performance: “A frustrating Sprint Qualifying this afternoon. My lap could have been cleaner, so I’m disappointed.” Despite his frustration, Norris remains confident about his chances in the Sprint race, with plans to attack and challenge the leaders.

“We’re in the mix and within touching distance of the leaders, with only a couple of cars to overtake. That’s my plan for the Sprint with the aim of scoring strong points in our push for the Championship,” said Norris, signaling his intent to continue the fight for the title.

For Oscar Piastri, the day was far more challenging. A mistake in the final sector during SQ1 saw his best time deleted, forcing him to start the Sprint from P16. “It’s a shame to be out of Sprint Qualifying so early. Most of the lap was good, but I just made a few mistakes in the last sector,” Piastri admitted. Despite the setback, he remains determined to help McLaren score points.

“It’s going to be tough to get back up into the points from where we are, but we’ll do what we can and try to secure some valuable points for the team,” Piastri added, understanding the gravity of McLaren’s title ambitions.

With only 19 laps in the Sprint, time is limited for both drivers to make up ground. McLaren’s title hopes are hanging in the balance, and both Norris and Piastri will need strong performances to keep the fight alive.
