In an unexpected twist in the world of Formula 1, McLaren CEO Zak Brown has unveiled that the team’s strategy of exploring the market resulted in them enquiring about the contract status of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. This revelation comes on the heels of the confirmation that Oscar Piastri, McLaren’s current reigning champion, has renewed his long-term contract with the team, solidifying McLaren’s championship-winning duo, with Lando Norris having extended his contract over a year ago.

Brown elucidated the rationale behind the timing of Piastri’s contract renewal, emphasizing the need for stability in the team, and eliminating distractions, thereby enabling Piastri to perform at his best. “The objective is to have stability and visibility moving forward,” Brown shared in a meeting with selected media outlets, including Motorsport Week. He further stated that this decision sets a positive mindset amongst the team, allowing individuals to perform at their optimum levels without any distractions.

Speculation about Verstappen’s potential move away from Red Bull has been rife, given the rumored turmoil within the team last season. Red Bull, on the other hand, has shown interest in Norris and Piastri, further fueling the speculation. Mercedes, a known admirer of the Dutch racer, and Aston Martin have also been mentioned as possible destinations for Verstappen should he choose to leave Red Bull.

Dutch publication De Telegraaf reported that Brown approached Verstappen’s team some time ago to inquire about the racer’s future availability. However, Verstappen’s contract with Red Bull, which runs until 2028, includes several performance-related clauses that could potentially allow him to sever ties with the Milton Keynes-based team prematurely. Despite this, Verstappen hasn’t shown any overt desire to leave Red Bull and it’s believed that Brown’s enquiry was merely a part of his strategy to explore the market.

The decision to sign Piastri on a long-term contract, potentially for the majority of the decade, suggests that Brown’s interest in Verstappen was more exploratory than serious. The renewal of Piastri’s contract on the eve of the F1 Australian Grand Prix indicates McLaren’s preference for stability over the allure of poaching a driver from a rival team.

Echoing Brown’s sentiments, Andrea Stella, the Performance Director of McLaren, emphasized that Piastri’s contract extension aligns with the team’s long-term vision of stability. He also highlighted the duo of Lando and Oscar as fundamental to McLaren’s competitive edge. He credits their presence for the team’s successful haul of 27 podiums, 8 victories, 11 pole positions, and ultimately, the World Championship.

The recent developments and revelations have stirred the pot in the world of Formula 1, setting the stage for an intriguing season ahead. As Max Verstappen and McLaren lock horns on and off the track, fans and pundits alike will be eagerly watching the unfolding drama.
