As McLaren prepares for the penultimate race of the 2024 Formula 1 season in Qatar, team principal Andrea Stella has issued a stern reminder: the battle for supremacy against Ferrari and other top teams is far from over. While McLaren holds a 24-point lead over Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship, Stella has made it clear that overconfidence could lead to disaster.
Mercedes’ Vegas Heroics Provide McLaren a Lifeline
The Las Vegas Grand Prix saw McLaren grappling with challenging conditions, with the team unable to unleash the full potential of the MCL38. Ferrari, capitalizing on McLaren’s struggles, clawed back points in their championship fight. However, Mercedes’ surprise 1-2 finish, led by George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, shielded McLaren from a heavier blow.
“We lost 12 points in the championship, which is disappointing,” Stella admitted. “But, given how much we struggled, we really have to thank Mercedes for their P1-P2 finish. Without them, Ferrari would have been an even bigger threat.”
The Qatar Circuit: A High-Speed Battleground
On paper, the Lusail International Circuit seems tailor-made for McLaren’s MCL38, with its high-speed layout playing to the car’s strengths. The track could give McLaren a golden opportunity to extend their advantage in the Constructors’ Championship. But Stella warned that assumptions of dominance could backfire.
It’s true that Qatar and Abu Dhabi should suit the design of our car,” he said. “But we must be careful. The competition at the top of Formula 1 in 2024 is unprecedented. I really can’t recall a season where four teams operated at such a high level, each capable of dominating under the right conditions.”
Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes Remain Serious Threats
Stella underscored the importance of maximizing McLaren’s potential in Qatar, cautioning that Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes have been gathering critical data from recent races and could pose serious challenges.
“If we think this will be an easy ride, we’ll be hit by reality. The level of competitiveness this season means that any of the top teams—Ferrari, Red Bull, Mercedes—can win in Qatar.”
“We Aim for Perfection,” Says Stella
The McLaren boss stressed that the team’s focus is on flawless execution, emphasizing that even a small misstep could have major consequences in such a tight championship fight.
“We go to Qatar knowing we need to maximize the car’s potential. On paper, our car should perform well on this track, but we’re leaving nothing to chance.”
The Final Stretch: A Nail-Biting Finish
With two rounds remaining, McLaren faces a critical moment in their quest to end a Constructors’ Championship drought that dates back to 2008. Stella summed up the stakes as follows:
“It’s a much more interesting—far more than I would have liked—end to the season. I always try to make things boring, but this is anything but.”
As the battle for supremacy heads to Qatar, McLaren knows that victory will require not just speed, but also strategy, resilience, and precision. The pressure is on, and there’s no margin for error.
