McLaren Boss Backs Piastri’s Resilience Following Australian Grand Prix Disappointment

McLaren doubts Christian Horner’s ‘honesty’ regarding Lando Norris comment after Austrian Grand Prix.

Despite the disheartening outcome at the Australian Grand Prix, McLaren’s team principal Andrea Stella remains unwavering in his confidence in Oscar Piastri, expecting the young driver to rebound swiftly. Stella’s support comes on the heels of Piastri’s home race disappointment, where a promising podium position slipped through his fingers due to an unfortunate incident on the track.

The Albert Park Circuit, holding the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, was the stage where Piastri, on his third F1 appearance, was predicted to attain a dream podium position. The Australian prodigy was performing exceptionally well, trailing only behind his teammate, Lando Norris. However, an unexpected rain shower on the 44th lap caused both McLaren drivers to veer off course at Turn 12.

While Norris managed to recover, Piastri’s off-road excursion led to a slow spin, leaving him stranded in the grass. Despite the setback, Piastri demonstrated commendable determination, regaining lost ground and executing a daring last-lap overtake of Lewis Hamilton to secure the ninth position.

Despite Norris’ triumph over a late charge from Max Verstappen, McLaren’s otherwise victorious day was smudged by the missed opportunity of a 1-2 finish. “Mixed feelings,” Stella admitted to Motorsport Week, “Oscar and Lando were driving brilliantly until the sudden rain hit. Oscar just paid a bigger price with the off-track incident.”

Piastri’s mistake might have cast a shadow over an otherwise promising weekend, but Stella is not one to overlook the young driver’s exceptional performance. He lauded Piastri’s calm and lucid handling of the changing conditions, highlighting his potential for future victories.

“Oscar was deserving to be in contention for the victory until the last moment,” Stella stated, underscoring Piastri’s impressive third-year start in Formula 1. Stella also praised the cooperative relationship between the McLaren drivers, attributing the competitive lap times and qualifying gaps to their mutual learning process.

Despite the disappointment, Stella is confident in Piastri’s mental fortitude. He fully expects the young driver to quickly bounce back at the upcoming Chinese Grand Prix. “He is one of the mentally strongest drivers I’ve ever met,” Stella declared, “He will have many satisfactions this year, because he is fast and the car seems to be fast.”

In Stella’s eyes, the Australian Grand Prix was merely an unlucky race for Piastri, not a sign of future struggles. He expressed no need for psychological exercises to convince Piastri not to be overly critical of himself or the situation. The McLaren boss maintains unshakeable faith in Piastri’s resilience and is eager to see the driver achieve significant results soon.
