Lando Norris, British driver for McLaren, competed in the Canadian Grand Prix on June 9, 2024, as part of the Formula 1 World Championship. Despite the team’s recent improvements, McLaren boss Andrea Stella acknowledged that they are still not able to win races based solely on their speed. Stella revealed that updates will be implemented in the upcoming races to address this issue. Last season, McLaren underwent a significant turnaround, going from elimination in Q1 to achieving regular podium finishes. Norris took advantage of the initial improvements in the MCL38 car and secured his first victory in Miami. He also engaged in a fierce battle against Max Verstappen’s Red Bull in Imola. So far this season, Norris has achieved five podium finishes in the first nine races, while his teammate Oscar Piastri finished second in Monaco, splitting the Ferrari cars. Despite his success, Norris expressed disappointment in Canada, where a potential victory was lost due to McLaren’s indecision during a Safety Car period. Stella, however, believes that the team’s progress is evident in the fact that they are now podium contenders and even potential winners. He sees the disappointment as a positive sign of McLaren’s growth. Stella emphasized the team’s consistency in being competitive on different circuits and conditions, which is not something that can be taken for granted. However, he acknowledged that there is still work to be done to make the car faster and capable of competing for victories, regardless of the circuit or conditions. In dry conditions, Mercedes has proven to be faster than McLaren, highlighting the need for additional improvements in performance.

The McLaren took advantage of Ferrari’s disastrous weekend to narrow the gap in the championship, while Mercedes emerged as a strong contender. The German team implemented an aggressive development strategy to progress in the top three and indicated that this approach will continue in the upcoming races.

However, Stella, a key figure in McLaren, revealed that the team may introduce new components in the car as early as the Spanish Grand Prix. These updates, however, will not be as significant as the major overhauls seen in the previous year. Instead, they will consist of individual parts that offer incremental performance gains. Stella emphasized that McLaren will not wait to deploy all the updates together, but rather introduce them on the track as they become available.

When asked about the mood and level of confidence within the team when consistently competing at the front, Stella acknowledged that confidence is growing within the team. However, he emphasized that confidence alone is not enough. It must be channeled into the design of new parts and to motivate the team to work harder and strive for more success. Stella highlighted the importance of maintaining high-quality work, from the design of the parts to the consistency of operations and driving performance. While confidence plays a role in the team’s energy, it is good work and a focused mindset that will drive McLaren’s success.

Stella also pointed out that confidence can have a positive impact on various aspects of the team, including the pitstop crew and the drivers. Athletes perform better when they are in a confident state of mind. However, he reiterated that confidence cannot be relied upon alone. McLaren’s focus remains on producing high-quality work and maintaining a determined mindset to achieve their goals.
