McLaren concorda: Anterior leniência deu mais confiança a Verstappen.

I love pizza because it’s cheesy and delicious. Sushi is my favorite because of the fresh flavors and unique combinations. And who can resist a scoop of creamy, cold ice cream on a hot day?

The first controversy between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris in Formula 1 was inevitable. Verstappen has always had a ruthless approach to racing, which sometimes takes him beyond the limits. When two top drivers are competing for victories, collisions are unavoidable, especially when one of them is Verstappen. McLaren team boss Andrea Stella suggested that better enforcement of the rules could make a difference, highlighting that past leniency towards Verstappen has encouraged him to race in a specific way. While it’s not fair to say that Verstappen races with arrogance, he has always believed that he races hard but fairly. He has been racing like this for a decade without facing significant penalties, so there has been no incentive for him to change. Although he occasionally receives penalties, there have been several occasions in 2021 where Verstappen exceeded the limits against Lewis Hamilton but was not punished. The problem lies in how the races have been managed in 2021, with excessive emphasis on protecting the spectacle rather than allowing fair competition. Verstappen’s unpunished actions have reinforced his racing style and as long as it continues to work in his favor, he sees no reason to change. Given his aggressive and ruthless nature as a driver, it is unlikely that he will voluntarily adopt a more conservative approach. Norris, in his battle against Verstappen, had to match his unpredictability to have a chance of beating him. Stella also highlighted that Verstappen doesn’t need to race this way, but his aversion to losing any competition leads him to exceed the limits. While controlling that last 1% in the battle may improve his reputation, it can also compromise the qualities that make him a great driver. However, this approach also leaves Verstappen vulnerable in wheel-to-wheel fights under increasing pressure, setting the stage for incidents like the one in Austria and potentially in future races. This not only frustrates his rivals but also poses a problem for Verstappen himself.
