In the journey towards sustainable mobility, Mazda announced that it successfully conducted a demonstration operation of a dome melting furnace at its factory in Hiroshima, Japan, where it completely replaced fossil fuels with biochar briquettes, a biomass fuel derived from coconut husks.
In a statement, Mazda revealed that the “operation of a dome that uses 100% biomass as fuel has not been confirmed for social implementation worldwide, with the company taking on the challenge of conducting this demonstration experience in collaboration with the foundry industry and local partners”.

In the future, the Japanese brand intends to “broaden the circle of regional cooperation and will promote an energy circulation scheme for local production and local consumption, aiming to achieve carbon-neutral operation of domes that use biomass fuels obtained from natural waste, such as biochar briquettes, by Fiscal Year 2030.”
It is worth noting that this initiative by Mazda is part of the brand’s emission reduction plan, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality in its factories globally by 2035, with the goal of reaching carbon neutrality across its entire supply chain by 2050.
