Mayfield’s Future With Buccaneers: Key Detail Revealed!

Baker Mayfield’s Influence on Buccaneers OC Hire Revealed

Quarterback Baker Mayfield’s future in the NFL remains uncertain as he approaches free agency in March. However, his role in the recent hiring of offensive coordinator Liam Coen for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers suggests that Mayfield’s input will play a significant role in determining his next destination.

According to ESPN’s Jenna Laine, the Buccaneers collaborated with Mayfield in the decision-making process for their offensive coordinator position. This opportunity arose after Dave Canales, the previous offensive coordinator, left Tampa Bay to become the head coach of the Carolina Panthers in January.

Canales’ departure left the Buccaneers in a potentially challenging position, considering his instrumental role in helping Mayfield achieve a career year in 2023. Furthermore, Mayfield has faced a lack of stability at the offensive coordinator position throughout his six-year NFL career.

When asked about his involvement in the hiring process, Mayfield responded, “Do I know them? Do I have any interaction? What are my thoughts on that?” This level of collaboration is new for Mayfield, who was selected as the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns.

Despite his draft status and early success with the Browns, Mayfield did not have the same level of input in previous organizations. After being traded by the Browns in a deal that led to his release from the Panthers in December 2022, Mayfield briefly joined the Los Angeles Rams before exploring free agency.

During his time with the Rams, Mayfield developed a connection with Coen, who served as the offensive coordinator at the time. Mayfield spoke highly of Coen, stating, “He may not be as outgoing as I am, but he’s definitely fiery.” Their partnership proved fruitful on the field, with Mayfield leading a remarkable 17-16 comeback victory over the Las Vegas Raiders just 48 hours after joining the team.

Reflecting on his experience with the Rams, Mayfield said, “It brought that feeling of having that success and really remembering what it was all about, kind of hit the reset button for me.” This rejuvenation has undoubtedly influenced Mayfield’s perspective on his future in the NFL.

As Mayfield’s free agency approaches, his involvement in the hiring of Liam Coen as the Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator suggests that his input will heavily influence his next career move. With Mayfield’s track record of success and newfound collaboration with coaching staff, all eyes will be on his decision in the coming months.

In a stunning turn of events, quarterback Mayfield has finished his 5-game stint with the Rams, leaving fans in awe. Throughout his time with the team, Mayfield showcased his talent by throwing for a whopping 850 yards and four touchdowns, all while only throwing two interceptions. When asked about his success, Mayfield humbly credited head coach Sean McVay and “a bunch of other guys” for making a significant impact on his career.

But Mayfield’s journey doesn’t end there. He recently revealed that the Buccaneers offense, under the guidance of Canales, operates on a very similar system to the Rams under Coen. This revelation has only solidified Mayfield’s belief in the importance of continuity in an offense. While there may be some differences in terminology, Mayfield recognizes the value of having a consistent system for the skill players and offensive line.

However, maintaining this continuity won’t come cheap for the Buccaneers. According to Spotrac, Mayfield is projected to earn a staggering $27.1 million annually or secure a lucrative 4-year, $108.51 million contract. This is a significant jump from his previous 1-year, $4 million deal in 2023. As contract negotiations loom, Mayfield remains hopeful that a deal will be reached, especially with the recent hiring of Coen.

But Mayfield isn’t the only player the Buccaneers need to secure. Wide receiver Mike Evans is also in line for a hefty contract. To keep Evans on the team, Tampa Bay will need to invest $23.8 million annually or offer a substantial 4-year, $95.34 million deal. Mayfield, who has developed a strong connection with Evans, expressed his desire to see his teammate return for another season.

As the offseason progresses, all eyes will be on Mayfield and the Buccaneers as they navigate contract negotiations and work towards building a team that can compete at the highest level. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting story.
