Max Verstappen’s Tactical Mastery Leaves Lando Norris in Awe: McLaren’s Risky Strategy Backfires

Lando Norris Demands Answers from McLaren After Japanese Grand Prix Defeat to Max Verstappen

In a thrilling showdown at the Japanese Grand Prix, Lando Norris found himself questioning McLaren’s strategy as he narrowly missed out on victory against Max Verstappen. The intense race saw Norris trailing behind Verstappen for all 53 laps at the Suzuka Circuit, with both drivers pitting on the same lap, but it was the Red Bull driver who emerged victorious, claiming his first win of the 2025 Formula 1 season.

Despite his relentless pursuit, Norris never managed to close the gap to within one second of Verstappen to utilize the DRS, ultimately hindering his chances of overtaking the Dutch driver. Expressing his frustration, Norris remarked, “The race was won yesterday in hindsight, and I guess we always kind of know the better position you start, the more chance you have of winning.”

Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Norris admitted, “We tried some things. Maybe we could have tried a bit more with strategy.” The McLaren driver contemplated the possibility of utilizing different tactics such as the overcut or undercut but highlighted the challenges of passing at the Suzuka Circuit, describing it as “pretty much impossible.”

McLaren’s team principal, Andrea Stella, defended the team’s decisions, explaining that pitting Norris first would have disadvantaged Oscar Piastri, who was running in third place. Stella elaborated, “We saw that staying out would not have been faster than pitting.” Despite the strategic considerations, Norris acknowledged the difficulty of overtaking at Suzuka, emphasizing that “it takes about eight tenths of a second to attack the car ahead.”

In a dramatic moment during the race, Norris nearly overtook Verstappen in the pit lane, but the Red Bull driver managed to retain his position. Reflecting on the incident, Norris remarked, “I wasn’t even trying to race Max, I was just trying to cut the grass!” Verstappen, in jest, commented on the grass being “nicely cut” on the right-hand side.

The Japanese Grand Prix marked a missed opportunity for McLaren, who failed to capitalize on their strong performance throughout the weekend. With the championship battle heating up between Norris and Verstappen, every race becomes crucial in the quest for the title.

As Formula 1 gears up for the Bahrain Grand Prix, tensions are running high as the competition intensifies on the track. Fans can expect more exhilarating moments and strategic duels as the season unfolds.
