Max Verstappen’s Red Bull Exit? Shocking Contract Clause Could Blow F1 Dominance Wide Open

2025 F1 Season: The Most Competitive Grid in Decades Awaits – Can Verstappen’s win the fifth F1 title

Max Verstappen, the undisputed kingpin of Formula 1 in recent years, might not be as tethered to Red Bull Racing as fans and pundits once thought. Despite signing a record-shattering deal in 2022 that ties him to the Austrian powerhouse until 2028, whispers from the paddock suggest the deal isn’t bulletproof. Former Dutch F1 driver Robert Doornbos has dropped a bombshell: Verstappen could walk away if Red Bull’s competitive edge crumbles.

“The Contract Isn’t Worth That Much If Red Bull Falters”

Doornbos revealed that Verstappen’s long-term contract includes performance-based clauses—a ticking time bomb for Red Bull if their dominance wanes. “It’s up to the team to show if the package is competitive enough,” Doornbos said, bluntly. “If not, that contract isn’t worth much, because Max will just leave.”

This revelation casts a shadow over what was thought to be a seamless union of driver and team. Verstappen’s loyalty has been unwavering in public statements throughout the 2024 season. Yet, as Red Bull shockingly fell to third in the Constructors’ Championship standings this year, rival teams are sharpening their claws, ready to pounce.

The Rising Threats: Mercedes and Aston Martin Circle Like Sharks

While many believe Verstappen could be lured to Mercedes, where the allure of an F1 dynasty persists, others see a darker horse galloping into the mix: Aston Martin. The Silverstone-based squad is becoming a magnet for talent. With Fernando Alonso set to lead the team next year and Adrian Newey’s former colleagues in their corner, Aston Martin’s growing arsenal could tempt Verstappen away.

“If I were Max, I’d be pretty concerned about the engine program for 2026,” Doornbos warned. “Aston Martin, paired with Honda, is a far more familiar and reliable option for him. And let’s not forget—Lawrence Stroll doesn’t take ‘no’ for an answer.”

Red Bull’s Make-or-Break Moment

Red Bull’s engineers are reportedly burning the midnight oil to ensure the RB21 rises above the pack in 2025. This is not just about defending titles; it’s about proving the team’s resilience without the legendary Adrian Newey’s full-time involvement. Verstappen’s decision for the future could hinge on these efforts—and the looming engine regulation changes for 2026.

The stakes couldn’t be higher. Can Red Bull stay on top without their star driver bolting to a rival team? The paddock is buzzing with speculation, and one thing is clear: Max Verstappen’s loyalty has its limits, and Red Bull’s performance will determine how far those limits stretch.
