Max Verstappen’s Perspective on ‘Drive to Survive’ Portrayal: Ignoring Over Blocking

When Netflix’s ‘Drive to Survive’ introduced us to the behind-the-scenes happenings of the F1 seasons, it garnered a mixed reaction from the drivers themselves. Max Verstappen, a prominent figure in the series, voiced his discontent about how he was depicted by the show’s producers.

Notorious for his absence from a few seasons of the series, Verstappen had earlier expressed his dislike for the show in 2021. He highlighted that the producers had artificially created rivalries that didn’t even exist, leading to his decision of withdrawing from the series. However, in a recent development, Verstappen decided to have a sit-down with the Netflix team and clarified his stance.

The professional driver stressed the importance of being represented accurately and not being misquoted. He expressed his concerns about the producers using comments out of context, creating a false narrative. His participation in the series hinged on the producers understanding and respecting his viewpoint.

Despite his hopes, Verstappen was once again disappointed with the latest season, where he was shown in a negative light following Lando Norris’ debut Grand Prix win. The show portrayed him as being unhappy about his friend’s victory, an aspect he refuted on a Twitch stream.

Not a regular viewer of the show, Verstappen revealed his strategy to avoid any negativity on social media. Rather than blocking the content, he chooses to ignore it. This way, he argues, nobody knows about his aversion.

However, Verstappen isn’t the only driver who has been misrepresented by ‘Drive to Survive’. George Russell was another victim of the show’s dramatic narrative, as they showed him having a panic attack during the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix due to extreme heat and humidity. The Mercedes driver expressed his nonchalance about the portrayal, stating that he prioritizes his performance and team collaboration over a series’ depiction of him.

Regarding his interaction with the Netflix crew, Russell added that he barely noticed their presence. He also shed light on the difficulties he faced during the Singapore race due to the heat, which led to changes in his personal and cockpit management.

In conclusion, while ‘Drive to Survive’ offers an exciting glimpse into the F1 world, it’s clear that it’s not without its share of controversies. The series has been accused of misrepresenting drivers and creating unnecessary drama, leading to mixed feelings from the very individuals it seeks to portray. As the show continues to evolve, one can only hope that it will do so while maintaining a more accurate representation of its subjects.
