Liam Lawson Names Verstappen’s Controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Triumph as His Favorite F1 Race

BARCELONA, SPAIN - JUNE 03: Max Verstappen of the Netherlands and Oracle Red Bull Racing talks with Liam Lawson of New Zealand and Oracle Red Bull Racing in the garage during final practice ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Spain at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on June 03, 2023 in Barcelona, Spain. The winds of change are sweeping through Red Bull Racing with the promotion of Liam Lawson to the senior team alongside Max Verstappen for the 2025 Formula 1 season. After several seasons of domination with little challenge from his teammates, Verstappen might find himself in unfamiliar territory as he faces a younger, hungrier driver eager to make his mark.

A Shift in Team Dynamics

Since Daniel Ricciardo’s departure in 2018, Verstappen has enjoyed undisputed No. 1 status at Red Bull, solidified by his four world championships and consistent dominance over Sergio Pérez. Pérez, despite flashes of brilliance, was unable to mount a serious challenge, finishing 280 points behind Verstappen last season.

With Lawson’s promotion, Red Bull is signaling a new era—one where both drivers are expected to push each other to elevate the team’s overall performance. The 22-year-old Kiwi impressed the team with his raw speed and composure, making him a long-term asset and a potential successor to Verstappen.

“Lawson isn’t here to play second fiddle; he’s here to compete,” a team insider hinted. “Red Bull wants a lineup that can maximize points every weekend, not a one-man show.”

Can Lawson Match Verstappen?

Lawson’s entry comes with high expectations, but going toe-to-toe with Verstappen is no small feat. Verstappen thrives under pressure, as seen in his battles with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc in recent years. However, Lawson’s arrival might ignite a different kind of rivalry—one within the garage.

If Lawson matches or even outpaces Verstappen in qualifying or races, it could disrupt Red Bull’s carefully maintained team harmony. Verstappen has historically been vocal about team dynamics and would likely push back against any perceived threat to his supremacy.

Verstappen’s Response: Fight or Frustration?

A competitive Lawson could push Verstappen to new heights, but it could also lead to friction. Verstappen’s tenure at Red Bull has been marked by a clear hierarchy, and any deviation from that could unsettle him. However, it’s worth noting that Verstappen’s fiercest weapon has always been his ability to deliver under pressure.

If Lawson challenges Verstappen consistently, it could force the Dutchman to adapt, evolve, and dig deeper—a scenario that might ultimately benefit Red Bull.

“The best way for Max to maintain his control is simple: beat Liam on the track,” a former driver commented. “Actions speak louder than team orders.”

Red Bull’s Balancing Act

Team Principal Christian Horner and Red Bull’s management face a delicate balancing act. They must nurture Lawson’s growth while maintaining Verstappen’s confidence. The team’s history with driver management—think Vettel vs. Webber or the infamous Ricciardo vs. Verstappen era—shows it doesn’t shy away from fostering internal competition, as long as it delivers results.

What’s at Stake for Red Bull?

If Lawson performs well, Red Bull’s decision to promote him will look visionary. If not, it risks destabilizing the team dynamic. Either way, the Verstappen-Lawson pairing promises to inject fresh drama into the 2025 F1 season.

Fan Debate: Is Red Bull’s New Lineup a Gamble or a Masterstroke?

  • Will Lawson rise to the challenge and unsettle Verstappen?
  • Can Max maintain his dominance, or will the Kiwi prodigy disrupt Red Bull’s established hierarchy?

With high stakes and potential fireworks on the horizon, this Red Bull pairing could redefine the team’s legacy.
