Following the debut of Red Bull’s new RB21 car for the F1 2025 season, Max Verstappen, the team’s ace driver, has urged the team to usher in a new era, moving past the influence of the departed F1 design maestro, Adrian Newey. This call for renewal comes as Red Bull’s new race machine, the first in nearly two decades not to bear the touch of Newey, was revealed to the world.

Newey, a significant figure in Red Bull’s history, exited the team in May last year, taking up a fresh role as a managing technical partner with rival team Aston Martin. His departure from Red Bull marked a turning point, as the team experienced a considerable loss in form, managing to secure only five victories in the last 19 races of 2024.

Despite this, Verstappen, resilient as ever, broke a 10-race winless streak – his most extended dry spell since 2020 – by securing his fourth consecutive World Championship with two races to spare. However, the team’s overall performance dipped, and Red Bull ended up a disappointing third in the Constructors’ standings, trailing behind McLaren and Ferrari.

The new RB21, in spite of the team’s inconsistent performance in the latter half of 2024, bears a striking resemblance to its predecessor. Verstappen, however, has expressed a firm belief in the new technical leadership at Red Bull, headed by Technical Director Pierre Waché.

As reported by the BBC, Verstappen commented on Newey’s absence, “I don’t think we should think about that too much. It is done. He is not there any more. That’s how it is. It’s how it’s been last year. And I trust also the people who are there at the moment. We have to do it all together.”

Verstappen acknowledges the immense contribution Newey made to the team and remains excited about his new venture. The focus now, however, must be on the present team and the challenges that lie ahead.

A firm target for the F1 2025 season with Red Bull has not been set by Verstappen, given the uncertainty of the team’s standing. Following his initial drive in the RB21 in Bahrain, he expressed the importance of assessing the pace of the vehicle in the coming days to understand if improvements have been made over last year’s limitations.

“We don’t have a long time before the first race so, over testing, we hope to get a lot of mileage on the car and lots of runs in to understand where we can find time,” Verstappen stated. He further added that he looks forward to getting back to racing, especially on his favourite tracks, Spa and Zandvoort.

As the new season beckons, Verstappen and Red Bull are ready to face the challenge head-on, armed with a new car and a renewed sense of determination, hoping to recapture their former glory.
