Verstappen’s Instagram Like Fuels Controversy Over Red Bull’s Treatment of Liam Lawson

The Formula 1 world has been set ablaze once again, this time by Max Verstappen’s seemingly subtle yet powerful statement on social media. The reigning champion has stirred the pot by liking an Instagram post that condemns Red Bull’s handling of rookie driver Liam Lawson, suggesting that the team’s actions border on bullying.

A Bold Statement from the Racing World

The post in question was made by former Formula 1 driver Giedo van der Garde. He openly criticized Red Bull’s decision to drop Lawson after just two races, calling it more akin to bullying than a strategic sporting decision. Van der Garde’s comments reflect a growing sentiment among fans and insiders who believe the young Kiwi was not given a fair chance to prove his capabilities.

In his post, van der Garde lamented, “I’m getting a bit tired of all the comments that F1 is the toughest sport… In my opinion, this comes closer to bullying or a panic move than actual high athlete achievements.” His words struck a chord with many, including Verstappen and fellow F1 driver Pierre Gasly, who both showed their support by liking the post.

Lawson’s Short-Lived Stint at Red Bull

Liam Lawson’s brief engagement with Red Bull has come to a sudden and controversial end. After struggling in the RB21 during two challenging races, including a crash at the Australian Grand Prix and a disappointing finish at the Chinese Grand Prix, the team decided to part ways with the young driver. Red Bull’s Team Principal, Christian Horner, emphasized that the decision was performance-based, citing the need for more experienced drivers like Yuki Tsunoda to help develop the car.

However, the decision has not sat well with everyone. Sources close to Verstappen claim the Dutch driver is “shaken” by the turmoil surrounding Lawson’s dismissal. Despite acknowledging Lawson’s initial setbacks, Verstappen reportedly believes the move was hasty and chaotic.

Internal Strife at Red Bull?

As Red Bull grapples with mounting pressure to maintain its competitive edge in the 2025 F1 season, its internal decisions are drawing criticism. While Verstappen continues to shine on the track, the team’s revolving door approach to drivers is raising eyebrows.

Christian Horner maintains that the swift change was in Lawson’s best interest, allowing him to gain experience in a more supportive environment with Racing Bulls. “We have a duty of care to protect and develop Liam,” Horner explained, underscoring the team’s commitment to nurturing talent despite the harsh realities of the sport.

What Lies Ahead for Red Bull and Verstappen?

Verstappen’s subtle social media endorsement of van der Garde’s post suggests a potential rift within Red Bull’s ranks. Whether this will lead to further discord or impact the team’s performance remains to be seen. As the F1 season progresses, all eyes are on Red Bull to see how they navigate this storm of controversy. Will Verstappen’s silent protest lead to changes, or is it merely a reflection of the high-stakes drama inherent in the world of Formula 1?

The unfolding saga at Red Bull is a testament to the intense pressures and swift decisions that define the pinnacle of motorsport. As the team moves forward, the balance between nurturing emerging talent and maintaining competitive dominance will continue to be a delicate one.
