Max Verstappen Shocks Motorsports World with Test in Estoril: What Does It Mean for His Future?

In a stunning twist that has sent shockwaves through the motorsports community, Max Verstappen took to the wheel of a Mercedes-AMG GT3 at the Estoril Circuit, sparking rampant speculation about his ambitions beyond Formula 1. The four-time world champion, known for his relentless drive and competitive spirit, has swapped traditional off-season relaxation for a rigorous testing schedule as he sets his sights on the prestigious 24 Hours of Nürburgring in 2026.

On a chilly and damp day at Estoril, Verstappen was behind the wheel of a Mercedes-AMG GT3, racing for 2-Seas Motorsport. As the weather improved, the track conditions turned favorable, allowing the Dutch driver to gain invaluable experience. This test is a crucial part of his preparation for an ambitious foray into GT racing, particularly aiming for glory in the GT World Challenge Europe and the legendary Nürburgring endurance race.

The move to Mercedes-AMG is not merely a random choice; it is part of the Verstappen.com Racing project, which is expected to adopt the Mercedes-AMG as its weapon of choice in the GT World Challenge Europe. Verstappen took this opportunity to familiarize himself with the handling of the GT3 car, comparing its performance with that of seasoned drivers accustomed to these high-powered machines.

The strategic pivot towards Mercedes-AMG is also motivated by team preferences. Chris Lulham, Verstappen’s teammate in the GT circuit, has touted the Mercedes-AMG GT3 as a superior vehicle, boasting advanced features and a more manageable driving experience than the Ferrari previously used by the team. Furthermore, Verstappen has reportedly maintained close ties with top executives from AMG, solidifying his connection with the German automotive giant. There are even whispers linking him to Winward Racing, a team touted as the frontrunner for a potential Nürburgring program in 2026, covering both the NLS endurance series and the 24-hour race.

Looking ahead, the 24 Hours of Nürburgring stands as a beacon for Verstappen—a goal that conveniently does not conflict with the 2026 Formula 1 calendar. However, the Dutch driver has made it clear: he will only compete if he can adequately prepare through prior participation in NLS events. With the 2026 F1 season ushering in a complete overhaul of regulations concerning chassis and power units, the path to preparing for the grueling Nürburgring challenge is fraught with obstacles.

Complicating matters, the pivotal NLS 1 race coincides with the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix. Yet, the NLS organizers have not dismissed the possibility of adjusting their schedule to accommodate Verstappen, acknowledging the immense media attention and influence his involvement would bring to their event.

This test session at Estoril is being interpreted as more than just a routine practice run; it is a clear signal of Verstappen’s intent to carve out a new legacy in endurance racing. As he tests the limits of the Mercedes-AMG GT3 and aligns himself with elite teams at Nürburgring, the young driver is methodically laying the groundwork for a significant shift into the endurance racing arena.

While many of his peers are taking a well-deserved break during the winter months, Verstappen is doubling down on his commitment to racing, demonstrating that even outside the confines of Formula 1, he remains dedicated to pushing boundaries and finding success on the track. This relentless pursuit of excellence is what sets him apart and keeps the motorsport world on high alert for his next move.

As the countdown to 2026 begins, all eyes will be on Max Verstappen as he prepares for what could be a monumental chapter in his illustrious career. The question now is not just about his next steps in GT racing, but how he’ll redefine endurance racing’s competitive landscape.
