Max Verstappen takes charge: Mercedes lets F1 champion choose his dream 24-hour team!

Max Verstappen Gains Unprecedented Power: Handpicking His Team for the Nurburgring 24 Hours!

In a groundbreaking twist in the world of motorsport, Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen has been granted the extraordinary opportunity to select his own teammates for the highly anticipated 24 Hours of Nurburgring race. This revelation follows the announcement of a multi-year partnership between Verstappen and Mercedes-AMG, igniting excitement and speculation around his participation in this iconic endurance event.

Scheduled for May 16 to May 17, the 2026 Nurburgring 24 Hours promises to be a thrilling spectacle, yet Verstappen’s involvement remains uncertain. Despite the race not coinciding with any F1 weekends, the Red Bull star faces significant hurdles. He is barred from participating in any of the Nurburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) rounds or the 24-hour qualifiers due to scheduling conflicts with crucial F1 races, including the Chinese Grand Prix and the Bahrain GP.

To remedy this situation, Mercedes has formally requested a rescheduling of the NLS1 race, aiming to push it to March 21, right between the Chinese and Japanese Grand Prix. As NLS chief Mike Jager stated, “The request for a possible postponement has now been submitted, but nothing more than that.” The stakes are high, and the clock is ticking as Verstappen prepares for what could be a historic debut in this demanding race.

But who will join Verstappen in his quest for glory? Reports suggest that he is meticulously crafting his dream team, eyeing talents such as DTM runner-up Lucas Auer, sim racing prodigy Chris Lulham, AMG factory ace Jules Gounon, and Daniel Juncadella. However, not everyone is welcomed with open arms. Verstappen has reportedly ruled out Maro Engel following a heated social media spat. Engel seemed to downplay Verstappen’s record-setting lap at the Nurburgring, claiming it was achieved under advantageous conditions. Verstappen wasted no time in defending his record, responding sharply, “False. Don’t spread things when you don’t know how the car was set up and our engine settings.”

While the allure of the Nurburgring 24 Hours is palpable, Verstappen must also navigate the demanding landscape of the 2026 F1 season. With new regulations on the horizon, it may be prudent for him to focus solely on F1 as Red Bull aims to maintain its competitive edge. Nevertheless, the 28-year-old is not resting on his laurels. He has been actively testing the Mercedes-AMG GT3, a strategic move to bolster his experience before the RB22 launch in Detroit.

As the motorsport world watches with bated breath, the question remains: Will Verstappen rise to the challenge of the Nurburgring 24 Hours, and who will stand alongside him in this epic endurance battle? The stage is set for a thrilling showdown, and all eyes are on the reigning champion as he navigates these pivotal decisions.
