Reigning F1 champion Max Verstappen has hit back at “idiots” on social media who he claims exaggerated the tension between himself and Lando Norris during the 2024 season. The Red Bull driver addressed the rumors of bad blood between the two drivers, insisting their friendship remains strong despite the intensity of their first on-track title battle.
From Friends to Rivals
Verstappen and Norris, who have been close friends since their karting days over a decade ago, found themselves in the heat of a fierce championship fight in 2024. While their camaraderie off the track was well-documented, incidents in Austria, Austin, and Mexico City painted a picture of mounting tension as Verstappen fought to maintain his grip on the championship.
The clashes culminated in a dramatic showdown in Las Vegas, where Verstappen secured his fourth consecutive title, finishing ahead of Norris after a dominant display.
Verstappen Defends Friendship Amid Rumors
In Red Bull’s Talking Bull podcast, Verstappen directly addressed the social media frenzy, blaming online commentators for blowing their rivalry out of proportion.
“People always make it really a lot worse on social media,” Verstappen said. “There are a lot of idiots on that platform that always have something to say, something to complain about. Of course, there are positive people, but also some proper idiots. I think it’s better just to ignore all of that.”
He clarified that while the on-track battles were intense, they did not impact their friendship. “Lando and I, we got on very well. Of course, at times it got a bit tense on track, but off the track, that shouldn’t matter. We always try to do the best we can on track to get the best possible result.”
“It’s Normal in a Title Fight”
Verstappen dismissed the notion that their clashes indicated a strained relationship, pointing out that such moments are natural in high-stakes competition.
“You’re fighting for the World Championship. I think it’s normal that these kinds of things can happen, but we’re good,” Verstappen stated. “It’s all part of the sport, and I think people need to understand that.”
Social Media’s Role in F1 Drama
Verstappen’s comments highlight a growing concern among drivers about the role social media plays in creating and amplifying narratives that may not align with reality. While platforms can bring fans closer to the sport, they also serve as a breeding ground for misinformation and overblown controversies.
For Verstappen and Norris, the narrative of a crumbling friendship seems to be just that—a narrative, one that Verstappen is keen to leave behind as he celebrates another championship victory.
