Max Verstappen Slams FIA’s Baffling Sacking of Race Director Just Weeks Before Season Finale

The 2024 Formula 1 season, already laden with controversy, added another twist to its dramatic narrative as reigning world champion Max Verstappen expressed disbelief over the FIA’s decision to abruptly sack race director Niels Wittich.

The move comes on the heels of a chaotic, rain-soaked Sao Paulo Grand Prix that saw a string of incidents under Wittich’s watch. With just three races remaining in the season, including this weekend’s Las Vegas Grand Prix, the FIA’s timing has left Verstappen and many in the paddock questioning the rationale.

“A Perplexing Call”

Asked about the sacking during media duties in Las Vegas, Verstappen didn’t hide his bewilderment. While the Dutchman acknowledged that race control in Brazil left room for improvement, he found the mid-season replacement decision peculiar.

“I read the news and just continued with my day,” Verstappen said. “Of course, it’s a bit weird with three races to do that. It doesn’t matter if you’re positive or negative about certain things. I thought in Brazil there was definitely room for improvement, for example. It is still a bit weird to now deal with a different race director.”

The reigning champion added that, in his view, such a significant change should ideally take place during the off-season to allow the new race director time to acclimate.

“If you normally want to change a race director, maybe you would do it after the season. Then you have a bit of time for the race director to get up to speed with things. You also have pre-season testing to get into your role more. They have decided it, and we have to deal with it.”

“Who Is Rui Marques?”

The FIA has appointed Rui Marques as the interim race director for the final races of the season. Marques has garnered significant experience as a race director in junior series such as Formula 2 and Formula 3. However, the transition to Formula 1—a crucible of intense scrutiny and high stakes—raises concerns about how quickly he can adapt to the role.

Last year’s Las Vegas Grand Prix was marred by controversy and chaos, and all eyes will be on Marques this weekend to see how he handles the pressure. A single contentious call could thrust the new race director into the firing line of drivers, teams, and fans alike.

“Verstappen Stays Focused on the Track”

Despite his misgivings about the FIA’s decision, Verstappen remains laser-focused on the task at hand. Fresh off a stunning victory at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, the Dutchman is ready to unleash his aggressive racing style if needed, particularly as he eyes sealing another championship triumph.

“They have decided it, and we have to deal with it,” Verstappen reiterated. “For me, it’s about doing my job on the track.”

“FIA Under Fire Again”

The abrupt sacking of Wittich has reignited concerns about the FIA’s handling of race governance. Already facing criticism over inconsistencies in officiating and decision-making throughout the 2024 season, this latest move raises further questions about the organization’s internal processes and timing.

As the F1 circus lights up the Las Vegas Strip for the second edition of its glitzy night race, the spotlight will undoubtedly shine on Marques. Can he rise to the occasion and restore confidence in race control, or will the FIA’s controversial decision come back to haunt them during one of the most watched events of the season?

Only time will tell, but in true Formula 1 fashion, the drama seems far from over.
