Max Verstappen says that Red Bull is not worried about Sergio Perez’s disappointing weekend in Montreal at the moment. Red Bull has struggled to achieve dominant victories like it did last season. The competition has caught up and is providing fierce competition. Red Bull faced consecutive Did Not Finish (DNF) results after losing the RB20 in the previous race. Consequently, Red Bull is at risk of losing its top position to rival teams. However, the team is not concerned, as it considers these errors manageable for the Austrian constructor.
Sergio Perez recently signed a two-year contract extension with Red Bull, despite his poor performances. The 34-year-old driver lost his chassis in the race and was unable to finish. Verstappen believes Perez’s chances were already diminished after starting the race in 16th place due to elimination in the first qualifying session. However, the current world champion recognizes that Perez needs to score well to prevent rivals from closing in.
Verstappen secured the victory for the Red Bull team, while Perez did not score any points. Therefore, the 26-year-old driver believes that as long as one driver wins the race, there is no reason to worry. Red Bull can afford to make these mistakes with Perez, as long as Verstappen continues to win races and accumulate points.
Verstappen is hopeful that Red Bull will have both cars at the front again. He acknowledges the difficulties faced by Perez starting from the back of the grid in challenging conditions and retiring due to damage. Verstappen knew he needed to score well to prevent other teams from getting closer.
The challenges of Red Bull were also evident in the Canadian Grand Prix. However, Verstappen had a great performance and won the race. Nevertheless, the team aims to ensure that both drivers score points. The Dutch driver is confident that this situation will change soon for the Austrian constructor.
Although the results have been positive, Verstappen believes that Red Bull needs to work on improving the RB20. The team must make the car easier to drive for both Perez and himself. By ensuring a superior car performance, Red Bull can return to dominating the field, as it did at the beginning of the season.
Verstappen continues to give his best to maximize points for the team, while Perez struggles to do so. The Mexican driver may have become complacent after securing a two-year contract, but he needs to deliver results that meet Red Bull’s expectations. Perez needs to focus and match Verstappen’s dominant performance in the 2024 season.
