Max Verstappen reveals dramatic Red Bull weakness after stunning qualifying exit at Japanese GP

Max Verstappen Faces Major Setback in Shocking Qualifying Exit at 2026 Japanese GP

In a jaw-dropping twist that left fans and pundits alike reeling, Max Verstappen, the four-time world champion, suffered an extraordinary blow during qualifying for the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix. The Dutch racing sensation found himself shockingly eliminated in Q2, finishing a dismal 11th at the iconic Suzuka International Racing Course—a first for him since the 2025 Sao Paulo GP. This is a dramatic turn of events for a driver who has dominated the circuit and consistently placed among the top contenders.

The drama escalated as Verstappen not only failed to reach Q3 but was also outpaced by his own teammate, Sergio Perez, who last stole the spotlight from the 29-year-old at the 2024 Azerbaijan GP—a staggering 559 days ago. Adding to the humiliation, Red Bull’s own rookie driver, Arvid Lindblad, surged ahead to secure an impressive Q3 position, sending shockwaves through the Red Bull camp.

Expressing his frustration, Verstappen was seen tossing aside the data notes given to him by his engineer, a clear sign of the mounting pressure and disappointment he faced this season. “The car never turns mid-corner,” Verstappen lamented in an interview with Sky Sports F1, revealing an alarming weakness in his vehicle's performance. He further elaborated, “At the same time, this weekend, it’s just oversteering a lot on entry. It’s really difficult, unpredictable.”

Despite efforts to enhance the car's handling during Free Practice 3, Verstappen was still plagued by an unsettling lack of grip and understeer. “We thought we’d fixed it a little bit in FP3, but now in qualifying for me it was again undriveable,” he admitted, hinting at deeper, unresolved issues within the car's setup. The switch to a different aerodynamic package this weekend appears to have backfired, leaving Verstappen grappling with performance inconsistencies.

As if the woes couldn’t get worse, Verstappen was also beset by downshift problems that have plagued Red Bull for quite some time. During FP3, he was heard expressing his discontent over the radio, stating, “What’s going on with the shifts again over one lap? It’s just horrendous the downshifts.” When pressed by his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, about where the issues lay, his blunt response was, “Everywhere. Everywhere is just s**t.”

With the clock ticking down and only ten minutes remaining in practice, Verstappen returned to the pits to allow his mechanics more time to diagnose the troubling issues with his car, a clear indication of the pressure mounting on him ahead of the race.

Now, as the 2026 Japanese GP approaches, Verstappen must rally from the 11th starting position, a daunting task for a driver of his caliber. The road to recovery will be steep, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. Can Verstappen turn this disheartening setback into a comeback, or will the challenges of this turbulent season continue to haunt him? One thing is for sure: the eyes of the racing world will be glued to the track as Verstappen battles against the odds in a bid to salvage points and restore his reputation.
