The 2024 Formula 1 season will be remembered as one of Max Verstappen’s most challenging and triumphant campaigns. Despite driving what was often the third-fastest car on the grid, Verstappen showcased remarkable resilience and mental fortitude to secure his fourth consecutive World Championship. As the Dutchman looks back on the season, he credits staying calm under pressure as the key to his success.

Red Bull’s Struggles: A Season of Adversity

The year began with high expectations for Red Bull, but it quickly turned into a battle of persistence. The RB20, a car plagued with performance inconsistencies, struggled to match the pace of McLaren’s MCL38 and Ferrari’s SF-24. From Miami onward, McLaren emerged as the fastest car on paper, with Lando Norris leading a midseason charge that slashed Verstappen’s championship lead.

By the second half of the season, Red Bull found itself unable to address the RB20’s shortcomings, leaving Verstappen to rely on his racecraft and strategic acumen to defend a shrinking 78-point lead.

The Championship Decider: Staying Cool Under Fire

Verstappen’s title defense wasn’t without its flashpoints. Intense battles with Norris in Austin and Mexico City highlighted the fierce competition between the two drivers. However, it was Verstappen’s victory in Brazil that all but sealed the championship, demonstrating his ability to thrive in high-pressure scenarios.

Reflecting on the season, Verstappen emphasized the importance of composure:

“To stay calm in all the difficult situations. That’s not always easy. You’re always under pressure. Driving a Formula 1 car at those speeds and then making the right decision is not always easy. It may seem that way, but it isn’t. Otherwise, anyone could do it, right?”

This mindset, Verstappen admitted, helped him navigate a season where every point counted.

“My Strongest Season Yet”

Although Verstappen has repeatedly declared 2023 his favorite championship year, he believes 2024 was his strongest.

“Personally, I think this has been my strongest season. Last year was also very good; you always learn from that. But this season, it was much more important to be very good.”

His ability to outperform a car that lagged behind its rivals and defend his title against a relentless Lando Norris underscored his world-class abilities. This was a season where mental toughness and consistency mattered as much as outright speed.

The Norris Threat: Lessons Learned for 2025

Lando Norris, in his first real championship contention, pushed Verstappen to his limits and gained valuable experience in the process. Norris’s late-season form, coupled with McLaren’s superior car, made him a formidable rival. Heading into 2025, Norris is expected to be a major contender for his maiden title.

Verstappen, meanwhile, remains determined to stay ahead of the competition. Armed with the lessons learned from this grueling campaign, he aims to adapt and evolve in a sport that continues to intensify at the top.

The Family Factor: Is Verstappen Considering His Exit?

As Verstappen prepares for the 2025 season, rumors are swirling about his future in F1. With his first child on the way and growing interest in spending time with his family, speculation has arisen that the Dutchman might step away from the sport sooner rather than later.

Though Verstappen has not confirmed any plans for retirement, his comments in recent interviews suggest a man who values his personal life as much as his professional legacy.

2024: A Season That Defines a Champion

The 2024 season tested Max Verstappen like never before. From navigating a challenging car to facing a fierce rival in Norris, Verstappen proved why he remains the man to beat in Formula 1. His ability to stay calm under pressure, combined with his racecraft and determination, secured his place among the sport’s greats.

As the paddock prepares for the 2025 season, questions linger about how long Verstappen will continue to dominate. For now, fans can savor the brilliance of a driver who not only defended his title under immense pressure but did so in a way that solidified his legacy as one of Formula 1’s all-time best.
