Max Verstappen Red Bull exit talk ‘wasn’t a bluff’ Loyalty to Helmut Marko—And Red Bull Knows It

SAO PAULO, BRAZIL - NOVEMBER 03: Oracle Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner and Oracle Red Bull Racing Team Consultant Dr Helmut Marko celebrate Max Verstappen of the Netherlands and Oracle Red Bull Racing's win in parc ferme during the F1 Grand Prix of Brazil at Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace on November 03, 2024 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Max Verstappen has always been a man of his word, and during the tumultuous 2024 Formula 1 season, he proved it once again. In the midst of Red Bull’s internal drama, Verstappen made it clear that Helmut Marko’s role in the team was non-negotiable for him—a statement that carried real weight, thanks to a clause in his contract allowing him to walk away if Marko left.

A Crucial Saudi Arabian Weekend

As the 2024 season kicked off, Red Bull faced a storm of controversy. Accusations against Team Principal Christian Horner and whispers of internal leaks cast a shadow over the team. At the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, reports surfaced that Helmut Marko was under investigation for allegedly leaking details about Horner’s situation. This development put Marko’s future in jeopardy.

It was then that Verstappen stepped in, delivering a clear and calculated message.

“He’s an important part in my decision-making for all the time in the future as well within the team,” Verstappen said after clinching pole position in Jeddah.

The revelation that Verstappen’s contract included a clause tying his commitment to Marko’s presence underscored the seriousness of his remarks.

“It Wasn’t a Bluff”

Reflecting on that pivotal moment, Verstappen recently told De Telegraaf that his words were no empty threat.

“I think I did state clearly what I thought about it,” Verstappen said. “And I meant it too. It wasn’t a bluff. And they know that within the team too.”

While the turmoil weighed on him, Verstappen was measured in his approach, ruling out hasty decisions amid the chaos.

“The feeling was not quite 100 percent,” Verstappen admitted. “But on the other hand, I also don’t think that if something goes wrong, you can immediately just say: I’m leaving. I’m not like that.”

Clause Removed, Stability Restored

To ensure long-term stability, the clause in Verstappen’s contract allowing him to leave if Marko departed has since been removed. Marko himself confirmed to De Telegraaf that this adjustment was part of laying a stronger foundation for Red Bull’s future.

With this change, Verstappen’s current deal with Red Bull extends through 2028, as he aims for his fifth consecutive world title in 2025.

Marko’s Enduring Legacy

Marko, meanwhile, remains instrumental in shaping Red Bull’s future, continuing his work identifying and nurturing young talents. For Verstappen, his unwavering support for Marko speaks volumes about their deep professional bond and mutual respect.

The Bigger Picture

As Verstappen cements his legacy as one of Formula 1’s greats, his loyalty to those who have shaped his career stands out. His actions during the 2024 saga sent a clear message: he is not only a driver but a leader who values trust and stability in a high-stakes sport.

With Verstappen’s commitment reaffirmed and Red Bull refocused, 2025 looks set to be another defining chapter for both the Dutchman and his team.
