Max Verstappen, the formidable Red Bull driver, has expressed his satisfaction with the transformative enhancements made to the new RB21. It seems that the team at Red Bull has been successful in addressing the performance glitches that plagued last year’s car, much to Verstappen’s relief.

It’s worth recalling that Verstappen had a strong beginning to the 2024 Formula 1 season, yet the ensuing victory drought mid-season saw the Milton Keynes-based team buckle down to rectify the issues with the then-new RB21, a vehicle that had become a source of frustration.

The winter period saw the Red Bull team intensely focused on resolving last year’s issues. As pre-season testing in Bahrain kicked off, all eyes were on Red Bull and their refurbished machine. The RB21, while closely resembling the problematic RB20 in visual aesthetics, introduces a dramatic departure in terms of its performance.

Verstappen, who was vocal about the RB20’s shortcomings at the peak of its woes, has shared that, at this preliminary stage of testing in Bahrain, the new car is significantly more satisfying to handle. Despite running slightly wide through Sector 2 on his run and finishing third, a quarter of a second behind Lando Norris, Verstappen reported a positive driving experience.

“The car was quite decent to drive, to be honest,” he revealed to the press, including PlanetF1.com, at the F1 press conference in Bahrain.

As far as pace is concerned, Verstappen enjoyed the drive, which he found to be more predictable. He believes that the team has garnered valuable lessons from last year, which have been applied to the current model. He is looking forward to evaluating the car’s performance in Australia, a track with a completely different setup.

The critical issue of car balance, which was a major sticking point last year, seems to have been addressed. Verstappen feels that the direction in which the team is progressing is promising. He stated, “It can’t be worse than last year, so I think the direction that we are working in is good. A lot of things that we are still discussing and wanting to improve, but yesterday, I enjoyed it and that’s already a big difference to last year.”

Red Bull had a rough ride last season, struggling with the recalcitrant RB20. Verstappen, however, is tight-lipped about the specific areas where the car has improved, only stating that the improvements are widespread.

The four-time F1 World Champion, a vocal critic of the RB20, was questioned about the extent of his influence on the RB21’s development and his input into critical design decisions. Verstappen explained that he and the team recognized the need for substantial changes last year. He stated, “Quite a few things have changed. I give my feedback on what I think the car needs to go faster, and that’s what we tried to apply to it.”

As the new racing season looms, Verstappen’s initial verdict of the RB21 is encouraging. It will be interesting to observe how the car performs in different tracks and how it fares against its competitors. For now, though, the driver’s satisfaction with the vehicle is a promising start for Red Bull.
