Max Verstappen, the four-time F1 world champion, is rumored to be on the brink of leaving Red Bull at the conclusion of this season. Speculations about Verstappen’s future with Red Bull have been fueled by advisor Helmut Marko expressing “great concern” about the situation. Marko also revealed the existence of performance-based exit clauses in Verstappen’s contract, which is currently set to run until 2028.

Despite winning four consecutive championships with Red Bull, Verstappen’s chances of securing a fifth title in 2025 seem to be dwindling, with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris emerging as frontrunners for this year’s championship. The 27-year-old driver has only managed to win two out of the first 10 races of the season and is trailing Piastri by 43 points in the drivers’ championship standings.

Verstappen’s frustrations with Red Bull’s performance decline have led to speculation about his potential departure from the team in 2026. While Mercedes and Aston Martin have been linked as possible destinations for Verstappen, there are also rumors suggesting that he might consider taking a break from the sport altogether next year.

Former Dutch F1 driver Robert Doornbos, who briefly raced with Red Bull in 2006, has added fuel to the fire by suggesting that Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is delaying contract talks with his current drivers in hopes of signing Verstappen. Doornbos hinted at a scenario where Verstappen bids farewell to Red Bull and seeks new challenges elsewhere.

The uncertainty surrounding Verstappen’s future has raised questions about whether he will indeed part ways with Red Bull. While other drivers like George Russell and Kimi Antonelli are also approaching the end of their contracts in 2025, it is expected that they will receive contract extensions soon. This leaves Verstappen with limited options if he decides to leave Red Bull, potentially leading to a sabbatical from the sport as pundits have suggested.

As the F1 world eagerly awaits Verstappen’s decision, the possibility of a major shake-up in the driver lineup for the 2026 season looms large, with all eyes on the Dutch superstar and his next career move.
