Max Verstappen Pinpoints Red Bull’s Real Battle: Fixing the RB21 for 2025 Success

Max Verstappen, the reigning four-time Formula 1 World Champion, has set his sights on Red Bull reclaiming its dominance in the 2025 season. Following a bittersweet 2024 campaign where he clinched his fourth Drivers’ Championship but the team lost the Constructors’ title to McLaren, Verstappen has made it clear that Red Bull’s success hinges less on his new teammate, Liam Lawson, and more on solving the lingering issues with the RB20.

Red Bull’s 2024 Challenges: A Lesson Learned

Red Bull entered the 2024 season on a high, winning seven of the first 10 rounds. However, the momentum faltered as the RB20 grappled with severe balance issues, particularly under low-temperature conditions. These performance inconsistencies allowed rivals McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes to close the gap and ultimately surpass Red Bull in the Constructors’ standings.

Verstappen, reflecting on the RB20’s shortcomings, highlighted balance and temperature sensitivity as the Achilles’ heel of their campaign.

“We often lacked the necessary balance because we simply couldn’t get into the low-temperature window,” Verstappen told Blick. “The weaknesses have been narrowed down, and if we can rectify certain things over the winter, we’ll be back at the front.”

New Partner, Same Mission

Red Bull’s decision to replace Sergio Perez with Liam Lawson underscores its commitment to a fresh start. Lawson, with only 11 F1 races under his belt, faces the daunting task of supporting Verstappen while adapting to the high-pressure environment of a top-tier team.

Despite Lawson’s inexperience, Verstappen dismissed concerns about his new teammate’s impact on Red Bull’s title prospects.

“If we can get the car back to the front, the name in the other cockpit won’t matter,” Verstappen asserted. “It’s all about giving us a car capable of winning consistently.”

Verstappen’s Praise for Past Teammates

Reflecting on his time at Red Bull, Verstappen credited Daniel Ricciardo as the teammate who challenged and taught him the most.

“Definitely Daniel Ricciardo,” Verstappen said. “I was able to learn the most from him. I absorbed a lot and incorporated it into my experiences.”

Verstappen also had kind words for Perez, whose defensive driving in Abu Dhabi 2021 played a pivotal role in Verstappen’s first championship win.

“Sergio was always loyal. That’s a quality I really appreciate, and we made a great team for four years,” Verstappen added.

Looking Ahead to 2025: The Stakes Are High

As Red Bull gears up for 2025, the team faces the dual challenge of refining its RB21 and integrating Lawson into a high-stakes environment. Verstappen is acutely aware of the competition brewing at the front, predicting a five-team battle for supremacy.

“Five teams should be fighting at the front,” Verstappen said. “But I’m not making any predictions. We just need to focus on fixing what held us back.”

Verdict: The Pressure is On

For Red Bull, 2025 represents a critical opportunity to reassert its dominance. With Verstappen leading the charge and Lawson stepping into Perez’s shoes, the team’s fate will ultimately rest on its ability to iron out the kinks in its machinery. After all, as Verstappen emphasized, “The car is everything.”
