Four-time Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen has no plans to step back from racing as he prepares to welcome his first child with partner Kelly Piquet. The couple announced their joyful news ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, sharing their excitement about the “little miracle” on social media.
Racing Fatherhood
Verstappen, already a stepfather to Piquet’s daughter Penelope, expressed confidence in balancing his responsibilities as a father and a world-class racer.
“I’ve done [parenting] a bit already,” Verstappen said. “Of course, now it’s my DNA, but I think it’s absolutely fine. The baby will be in good hands when I’m away, so I can focus on racing and then come back to my family. That’s how it goes.”
The Dutchman dismissed any notion of taking a sabbatical from F1, stating, “I never considered taking a year out, to be honest.”
Parenting, Passion, and Priorities
Known for his intense focus on and off the track, Verstappen acknowledged that his hobbies, like sim racing, may take a backseat but won’t disappear entirely. “I’ll keep up my hobbies, but naturally, there will be a bit less time for certain things,” he admitted.
Passing the Racing Torch?
When asked if he hopes his child will follow in his footsteps, Verstappen revealed mixed feelings. With a family steeped in motorsport—his father Jos Verstappen is a former F1 driver, and Piquet’s father Nelson is a three-time champion—the potential for a racing legacy is undeniable. However, Verstappen stressed that his child’s path will be their own.
“If he or she wants to do it and I see that there is talent, I would support it,” Verstappen said. “But I really hope not. No pressure. Just live your life.”
A Racing Dynasty
The Verstappen-Piquet baby will be born into a family with a storied racing heritage. With two F1 champions as grandparents and a current champion for a father, the newest addition to the Verstappen-Piquet lineage will have no shortage of inspiration if they choose to explore the world of motorsport.
Looking Ahead
As Verstappen continues his dominant F1 career, his focus remains on both racing and embracing fatherhood. With his characteristic confidence, the Red Bull star is poised to tackle both roles with the same determination that has defined his rise to the pinnacle of Formula 1.
For now, Verstappen has his sights set on closing out the 2024 season on a high note before shifting gears to prepare for his next championship campaign—and his growing family.
