Max Verstappen’s Contract Dilemma Deepens: F1 Icon Claims $50 Million Mercedes Offer Highlights Crisis

In a shocking revelation that could reshape the future of Formula 1, Max Verstappen’s contract negotiations have hit a significant snag, leaving the four-time world champion in a precarious position. F1 legend Juan Pablo Montoya suggests that Verstappen’s leverage has dwindled dramatically due to Red Bull Racing’s recent struggles, particularly during the turbulent 2025 season. This downturn has forced Verstappen to reconsider his options, previously contemplating a lucrative switch to Mercedes, only to ultimately decide to stay with Red Bull.

Montoya’s insights paint a stark picture of Verstappen’s current standing. “I don’t think Max had a choice,” he stated bluntly. “If I was negotiating with Max last year when he was winning the world championship, let’s say, it would have cost $100 million. This year he’s in a struggling car. The number could be $50 million.” This statement underscores the drastic shift in Verstappen’s market value as Red Bull grapples with performance issues.

With the Dutchman’s recent performances resulting in a disheartening ninth-place finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix, the pressure is mounting. Red Bull’s inability to consistently compete for podiums has left Verstappen nearly 100 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri, raising serious questions about his future with the team. Montoya speculates that Verstappen might have overestimated the offers on the table, believing he could command a figure similar to last year’s. Instead, he may find himself negotiating from a position of weakness, as potential suitor Toto Wolff could easily leverage Red Bull’s current woes to offer a significantly reduced salary.

Compounding the situation is the major overhaul within Red Bull, following the departure of long-time team principal Christian Horner. The appointment of Laurent Mekies has introduced uncertainty, prompting Verstappen to express the need for structural changes at the team if they hope to regain their competitive edge. However, this process could take time, and if it drags on, the risk of losing their star driver grows exponentially.

As Verstappen reflects on his future, the prospect of joining one of Red Bull’s rivals remains tantalizingly within reach. With four world titles under his belt, securing a seat elsewhere wouldn’t pose a challenge for the talented 27-year-old. Yet, the clock is ticking, and if Red Bull cannot turn their fortunes around, Verstappen might soon find himself in search of greener pastures.

In a season marked by embarrassment and unexpected turmoil, the question remains: will Max Verstappen rise from the ashes of a faltering Red Bull, or will he seek a new path that could redefine his illustrious career? The world watches with bated breath as this dramatic saga unfolds in the high-stakes realm of Formula 1.
