According to Max Verstappen, Red Bull made a wise decision by renewing their new contender. Red Bull is ready to dominate the upcoming season with their latest challenger, the RB20. The car boasts a striking appearance and notable design modifications, challenging initial expectations. Incorporating modern radiator technology and a unique aerodynamic philosophy, the vehicle allows for more compact coolers without compromising heat rejection capabilities. The RB20 features a vertical radiator inlet, reducing surface area and resembling the design of the original Mercedes 2022 zero side pod, while also creating a significant undercut at the front.
Despite some reservations, Red Bull’s star driver, Verstappen, supports the concept of the RB20 and expresses optimism about its design. Having won 19 out of 22 races in 2023, Verstappen’s focus is on securing his fourth world title in 2024. He believes that the redesigned car will prevent rivals from getting too close on the track. During a media interaction, Verstappen shared his thoughts, stating:
“For the RB20, Red Bull has adopted a bold design that includes modified side pods and an engine cover reminiscent of the previous season’s Mercedes W14. By relying on Adrian Newey’s latest creation, Red Bull believes that their previous concept had reached its limits, and this change allows for further development.”
After dominating the previous season, Red Bull faced increased competition from other teams. To adapt to this challenge, the Milton-Keynes-based team decided to alter their strategy. The decision to abandon a championship-winning design in favor of a new one sparked discussions when Red Bull unveiled their RB20 pre-season model, which differed significantly from previous iterations. Max Verstappen employed this tactic to aid in his pursuit of a fourth world championship. Reflecting on this decision, Helmut commented:
“By the end of 2023, McLaren and Ferrari made significant progress, posing a competitive threat to Red Bull drivers in certain races. By 2024, this could become a recurring trend, showcasing the team’s ability to manage their operations. However, considering the comments from the Red Bull advisor, it is evident that the team remains in control.”
