Max Verstappen Exposes ‘Strange’ Steward Inconsistency in Game-Changing Penalty Drama

NORTHAMPTON, ENGLAND - JULY 06: Max Verstappen of the Netherlands driving the (1) Oracle Red Bull Racing RB21 leads Lando Norris of Great Britain driving the (4) McLaren MCL39 Mercedes on track during the F1 Grand Prix of Great Britain at Silverstone Circuit on July 06, 2025 in Northampton, England. In a shocking turn of events at the British Grand Prix, Max Verstappen has raised eyebrows over the inconsistency in steward decisions, specifically highlighting the case of George Russell and Oscar Piastri.

Verstappen expressed his bewilderment at Piastri being penalized for slowing down under the Safety Car, a situation he claimed to have experienced multiple times himself. The Dutch driver was taken aback by the stewards’ decision to hand Piastri a race-altering 10-second penalty for braking sharply behind the safety car, a move that cost the Australian driver dearly.

The scrutiny of Piastri’s telemetry by the stewards revealed a significant drop in speed, leading to the penalty that not only affected Piastri but also caused Verstappen to spin on cold tires. Despite the impact on his own race, Verstappen was surprised by the penalty, especially considering past incidents where similar actions went unpunished.

One such incident involved George Russell in Canada, where the Williams driver braked suddenly, seemingly in an attempt to provoke a penalty for Verstappen. However, Russell was cleared of any wrongdoing by the stewards, emphasizing the inconsistency in their decisions.

Verstappen’s own race saw him recover from a setback to finish fifth, citing a lack of downforce due to a skinny rear wing as a hindrance to his performance. The Dutchman acknowledged the challenge posed by McLaren’s pace, suggesting that even with more downforce, Red Bull would have struggled to match their rivals.

The controversy surrounding Piastri’s penalty and the perceived inconsistency in steward decisions have ignited debate in the Formula 1 community, with fans and experts questioning the fairness and transparency of such rulings. As the season progresses, the spotlight on steward decisions and their impact on race outcomes is likely to intensify, adding another layer of drama to an already thrilling championship battle.
