Max Verstappen Demands Red Bull Improvement to Challenge for Titles
In a thrilling turn of events in the F1 season, Max Verstappen has issued a stark ultimatum to Red Bull, emphasizing the urgent need for enhancements to their RB21 package if they aspire to keep up with the likes of McLaren and contend for championship titles.
The reigning Team Champion, McLaren, kicked off the 2025 season in spectacular fashion, clinching back-to-back victories in Australia and China. However, Verstappen emerged as a formidable force in the recent Japanese Grand Prix, delivering a brilliant qualifying lap and a remarkable race performance to outshine Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, securing pole position and the race win, thus disrupting McLaren’s winning streak.
With a podium and a 4th place in the first two races, Verstappen trails the championship leader by a mere point, setting the stage for a nail-biting title chase as he eyes his fifth consecutive individual title.
Reflecting on Red Bull’s first triumph of the season, Verstappen acknowledged, “It’s a good morale booster for the team, but we are still evaluating how we can swiftly improve our car. It’s nice to have that little motivational push, but we are very aware of our limitations and know that we still need to work on it. Hopefully, we can make incremental progressions every weekend.”
When probed about his expectations regarding McLaren’s competition in Bahrain and the potential for more glory if McLaren’s drivers battle each other, Verstappen commented, “If we have that pace, yes, but at the moment, it’s very hard to say. If we look at everything, they [McLaren] are more well-rounded and seem to have an easier time fine-tuning [their car] as well. It’s still a very long season, there are many aspects we want to work on with the car, and hopefully, step by step, make it more competitive.”
Pressed on whether he can defend his championship crown with the second or third-best car on the grid, Verstappen asserted, “No, we definitely need to improve to be able to fight for a title. It’s great to be one point behind, but I think it’s more because we’ve maximized our weekends very well so far. To truly contend for a title, we need to unlock more performance.”
While Verstappen currently sits in second place behind Norris in the Drivers’ standings, Red Bull occupies the third spot in the Team battle, trailing McLaren by 50 points.
