Max Verstappen afirma que foi capaz de ‘controlar a corrida’ em seu caminho para vencer a Sprint na Áustria.

Max Verstappen stated that after successfully overtaking both McLarens, he found himself in a solitary pursuit to secure victory in the Sprint at the Red Bull Ring.

The weekend is in full swing. Verstappen dominated the Sprint Qualifying event on Friday, surpassing both McLarens to claim pole position. Carrying that momentum into Saturday, the reigning world champion comfortably secured the win in the Sprint race. The Dutch driver shared his thoughts after the race.

Verstappen said he had a good start to the race. His strong start gave him an advantage over his competitors, and he mentioned that activating the DRS (Drag Reduction System) made it challenging to keep the two McLarens at bay. Verstappen struggled to distance himself from Norris, as the reigning world champion fought to escape the DRS zone.

Briefly, Lando Norris managed to take the lead in the race. However, both Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri quickly overtook the British driver. After that, Verstappen effortlessly pulled away from the pack. The Dutch driver stated that once he managed to get out of the DRS zone, he was essentially competing against himself. Verstappen also noted that the two McLarens were relentlessly striving to catch up with him during the Sprint.

Max Verstappen expressed, “It was a good start, but once the DRS is activated, it becomes difficult to get away from it. After I managed to get out of the DRS zone, I could focus on my own race. There were two cars relentlessly chasing me.”

In the beginning of the Sprint, it seemed like Max Verstappen could have difficulties overtaking Lando Norris. The Dutch driver faced pressure for a few laps. However, Verstappen crossed the finish line with a lead of over 4 seconds ahead of Piastri, who finished in second place after completing 23 laps.

Verstappen revealed that he will need to review the entire Sprint. The current world champion admitted that he was only focused on his own performance during the session. The Dutch driver emphasized that Red Bull will meticulously analyze the data to identify areas for improvement before the main race on Sunday.

“I need to thoroughly review the entire race. I was focused on my own performance, and we will examine the data to determine where we can make improvements for tomorrow,” Verstappen stated.

Undoubtedly, Max Verstappen is satisfied with maintaining his winning streak in the Sprint. The 26-year-old driver had a smooth race until the end of the session, without needing to engage in a battle against Piastri. However, Verstappen and Red Bull are aware that the two McLarens are not far behind in terms of pure speed. Consequently, it will be intriguing to witness the outcome of the Qualifying session for the Grand Prix.
