Reigning Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen has addressed the controversy surrounding Red Bull team boss Christian Horner, whose conduct was investigated prior to the 2024 season. While the probe cleared Horner of any wrongdoing, the fallout has sparked internal tensions that continue to ripple through the Milton Keynes squad, including a public clash with Verstappen’s father, Jos.

Horner Investigation and Jos Verstappen’s Criticism
Christian Horner faced allegations of inappropriate behavior toward a female Red Bull staff member ahead of the 2024 season. An internal investigation cleared Horner of all charges, allowing him to continue as team principal—a position he’s held since Red Bull’s inception in 2005.

However, the allegations fueled a feud between Horner and Jos Verstappen, Max’s father and a former F1 driver. Jos publicly questioned Horner’s leadership, suggesting his continued presence could destabilize the team and jeopardize its championship ambitions in 2025.

Max Verstappen’s Perspective
Max Verstappen, fresh off his fourth consecutive drivers’ title in 2024, dismissed the speculation about internal fractures but noted the absence of Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz, who passed away in 2022, as a factor in the prolonged controversy.

“Of course it wasn’t pretty, but I maintain that this case would be solved very quickly with Dietrich Mateschitz,” Verstappen told Blick. Mateschitz, renowned for his decisive leadership, was a pivotal figure in shaping Red Bull’s dominance in Formula 1.

Despite the lingering fallout, Verstappen reaffirmed his commitment to Red Bull, quashing rumors of a potential departure. “I’m happy with where I am,” he said, adding that his continued satisfaction depends on the presence of Helmut Marko, Red Bull’s long-serving advisor and a key figure in Verstappen’s career.

2025: A Season of Uncertainty
As Red Bull prepares for a competitive 2025 season, Verstappen highlighted key areas for improvement. The team faced challenges in 2024, including struggles with car balance and operating within optimal temperature windows—issues that Verstappen believes are critical to address during the winter break.

“If we can straighten out certain weaknesses in the winter, we’ll be back in front,” he said, while acknowledging the fierce competition expected this year. “Five teams should compete at the front. But I’m certainly not making predictions here.”

The Feud’s Potential Impact
While Verstappen Sr. continues to voice doubts about Red Bull’s leadership, the younger Verstappen remains focused on racing. The father-son dynamic adds a layer of intrigue to an already complex situation. Jos’ public criticisms risk exacerbating internal tensions, while Max’s loyalty to both Horner and Marko underscores his delicate balancing act within the team.

Will Red Bull Stay on Top?
With the 2025 season shaping up to be one of the most competitive in years, Red Bull must navigate not only fierce on-track rivals but also lingering internal conflicts. As Verstappen eyes a fifth title, the question remains: can Red Bull maintain its dominance amidst the noise?
