Max Verstappen Breaks Silence and confirms the Mercedes Talks: ‘I’m Loyal to Red Bull’

In a revelation that has sent ripples through the Formula 1 paddock, Max Verstappen has confirmed that he’s had discussions with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, sparking speculation about a potential move to the Silver Arrows. Despite the intrigue, the four-time world champion has made it clear: he’s staying loyal to Red Bull, the team he calls his “second family.”

“The Fastest Driver on the Grid” Draws Mercedes’ Interest
With his unmatched dominance in recent seasons, it’s no surprise that Verstappen has caught the attention of rival teams, including Mercedes. Reports emerged ahead of the Monza Grand Prix suggesting that Mercedes considered Verstappen as a future driver, before ultimately opting for rising star Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

Verstappen, speaking to Viaplay, acknowledged the natural interest from Mercedes.

“You want to have the fastest driver in your car. That’s completely understandable,” Verstappen said. “With them, of course, there was also a lot at play, and they had to make a choice for a new driver.”

The Dutchman’s connection to Mercedes also has deeper roots, thanks to his father, Jos Verstappen’s close friendship with Wolff. Jos has long been an active observer of Red Bull’s internal dynamics, often unafraid to confront team principal Christian Horner—a factor that adds intrigue to the Verstappen-Mercedes discussions.

Loyalty to Red Bull: “It’s Like a Second Family”
Despite Mercedes’ interest, Verstappen has no plans to leave Red Bull. The team that helped him secure four world championships remains central to his career and identity.

“I’ve achieved a lot of success with [Red Bull], and it just feels like a second family,” Verstappen shared. “It’s not like I wake up and say, ‘Yes, next year it’s done.’ I’m not someone who shoots from left to right very quickly.”

For Verstappen, any consideration of leaving Red Bull would require careful thought.

“You have to think about that kind of thing very carefully if you want to do that,” he added. “But right now, I really like where I’m sitting.”

Constructive Conversations with Toto Wolff
Verstappen revealed that his discussions with Wolff have been honest and professional, describing their interactions as “constructive.” He emphasized that maintaining communication with figures like Wolff is part of the business, but it doesn’t signal an imminent departure.

“Of course, we always talk to each other, and I’m not lying about the fact that we’ve been sitting together,” Verstappen said. “But I still just really like where I’m sitting. Everyone has always been very honest and open with each other.”

Despite the conversations, Verstappen reiterated his loyalty to Red Bull, underscoring that there’s “not a whole lot to be gained at the moment” by switching teams.

What’s Next for Verstappen and Mercedes?
The Verstappen-Mercedes talks underline the ever-evolving power dynamics in Formula 1. For Mercedes, securing Antonelli signals a focus on developing young talent, while Verstappen’s commitment to Red Bull reinforces the stability of one of the most successful partnerships in modern F1 history.

While the rumors may keep the paddock buzzing, Verstappen’s stance is clear: his loyalty lies with Red Bull. For now, the Dutchman’s eyes are firmly set on continuing his reign with the team that has propelled him to the pinnacle of the sport.
