Max Verstappen blasts team orders: “Obeying them means selling your soul in F1”

Verstappen’s Fierce Stand: “If You Follow Team Orders, You’re Selling Your Soul!”

In a striking revelation that’s sure to send shockwaves through the Formula 1 community, Max Verstappen, the four-time world champion, has drawn a hard line against team orders, making it crystal clear that he refuses to compromise his integrity for the sake of his team. “I’ve been very clear. Don’t ever ask me for something like that again,” Verstappen proclaimed over the radio after the controversial Brazilian Grand Prix in 2022. This bold statement came as a response to the astonished Red Bull pit wall, who struggled to comprehend why Verstappen would not relinquish his sixth position to help teammate Sergio Perez in his quest for a higher spot in the drivers’ standings—a battle that ultimately slipped away from Perez against Charles Leclerc.

In a recent interview with Swiss outlet Blick, Verstappen elaborated on his philosophy regarding team dynamics and personal responsibility on the track. “Would I have slowed down like Piastri did twice in 2025? Absolutely not,” he stated emphatically. “If you do it once without a clear reason, you’re selling your soul. The team can then do whatever they want with you.” This sharp critique of team orders highlights a fundamental concern: the potential for drivers to lose their autonomy in the face of corporate interests.

Verstappen’s comments are particularly poignant in light of the recent controversies surrounding Oscar Piastri, especially during the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, where Piastri controversially yielded position to Lando Norris following a slow pit stop. Verstappen’s incredulity was palpable as he remarked with disbelief, “All of this just for a slow pit stop?” His laughter during the race underscored his disbelief at the decision-making that can undermine a driver’s competitive spirit.

As the motorsport world buzzes with discussions about loyalty versus individual ambition, Verstappen’s stance serves as a potent reminder of the delicate balance between teamwork and personal integrity in one of the most competitive arenas in sports. His refusal to bow to team orders not only cements his reputation as a fierce competitor but also raises critical questions about the ethical implications of team strategies in Formula 1.

With tensions simmering and alliances being tested, Verstappen’s declarations resonate louder than ever, challenging both drivers and teams to reconsider the true essence of racing. Will others follow suit, or will the relentless pursuit of victory continue to overshadow personal principles? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: in the high-stakes world of Formula 1, Verstappen is not afraid to speak his mind.
