Maserati Recalls GranTurismo and GranCabrio Models Over Faulty Fuel Level Indicator: High-Speed Stalling Risk

Maserati Issues Recall for GranTurismo and GranCabrio Models Due to Software Fault
Maserati has announced a recall affecting 524 vehicles, including 70 units of the GranCabrio and 454 of the GranTurismo, produced between November 20, 2022, and July 4, 2024. The recall addresses a critical issue with the body control module (BCM) software supplied by Continental Automotive Systems, which can cause incorrect fuel level readings on the digital instrument cluster, significantly increasing the risk of stalling at high speeds.

Stalling at High Speeds Poses Crash Risks
Stalling at high speeds is a serious safety concern, as it greatly increases the likelihood of a crash. The affected Maserati models are equipped with the 3.0-liter Nettuno twin-turbo V6 engine, paired with a ZF torque-converter automatic transmission, all-wheel drive, and a rear limited-slip differential. The AWD system is capable of sending up to 50% of available torque to the front axle, highlighting the performance focus of these luxury vehicles.

Initial Reports and Investigation
Maserati first received a claim in July 2023 regarding a faulty fuel level reading, where the digital instrument panel showed a quarter tank when the vehicle was actually empty. This prompted an investigation involving Maserati’s engineering and manufacturing teams, as well as their supplier. Prior to filing recall documentation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Maserati was aware of two field reports, four warranty claims, and four customer assistance records potentially linked to the issue, spanning from July 2023 to June 2024.

Dealers to Update Software; Owner Notifications Coming Soon
To fix the problem, Maserati dealers will update the BCM software to correct the inaccurate fuel level display on the 12.2-inch digital instrument cluster. This cluster is part of a larger infotainment setup that includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen display and an 8.8-inch touchscreen for climate control. Owners will receive notification letters around October 28, 2024, and can verify if their vehicle is affected by checking their VIN, which should start with the letter Z, on the NHTSA’s website.

Performance Variants and Pricing
Aside from the recalled models, Maserati’s GranTurismo and GranCabrio are available in Trofeo and Modena trims, offering substantial power outputs. The Trofeo versions deliver 542 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, making them significantly more potent than the base models. The all-electric Folgore variant, boasting 751 horsepower and 996 pound-feet of torque, sits at the top of the range. Despite not matching the punch of Maserati’s mid-engine MC20, the GranTurismo Trofeo achieves a top speed of 199 mph and sprints from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds. Pricing starts at $158,000 for the GranTurismo Modena, with the GranCabrio Folgore topping the lineup at $205,000.

Safety First as Maserati Works to Address Critical Issue
Maserati’s recall underlines the importance of accurate fuel level readings, as incorrect indications can lead to unexpected stalls, endangering drivers and passengers. The Italian automaker is actively working to resolve the issue and get affected vehicles back on the road safely.
