Maserati has abandoned plans to produce a 100% electric version of the MC20 sports car due to a decline in demand for fully electric high-performance models.
A spokesperson for the Italian company told “Car & Drive” that Maserati customers continue to favor powerful combustion engines. This setback in electric mobility now raises questions about the Trident brand’s strategy to sell only electric vehicles by 2028.
It is worth remembering that at the beginning of 2024, Maserati made it clear that it believed more than ever in the electric mobility of the future and revealed plans to launch a range of 100% electric models, which would join the GranTurismo Folgore and Grecale Folgore that are already on sale.
A year later, the Italian brand has abandoned the MC20 Folgore project, thus maintaining a range of electric versions that includes the Grecale and the sports cars GranTurismo and GranCabrio.
It remains to be seen whether by giving up the fully electric MC20, the Trident brand will also abandon plans for the next generation of the Quattroporte and Levante to have fully electric variants.
